Most Sports Venues With Under 10 Google Reviews Score a Perfect 5.0. Past 1,000 Reviews, Almost None Do.

On paper, Wisconsin is the happiest state in America to play sport. Its venues average 4.96 stars on Google, the highest of the 30 states where we list at least 50 rated venues. Arizona comes last at 4.63. Before anyone plans a move to Milwaukee: the typical Wisconsin venue in our directory has 2 Google reviews. The typical Arizona venue has 72.

That gap explains most of the league table. Across 10,863 rated venues, 87% of those with fewer than ten reviews show a perfect 5.0. Among venues with a thousand reviews or more, 4% do. The average rating slides from 4.88 in the first group to 4.50 in the last, and it falls at every step in between.

Nothing sinister is going on. A venue with four reviews has often heard only from its keenest customers — regulars, friends, the parents of a child who just earned a new belt. A venue with four thousand has heard from everyone, including whoever waited forty minutes for a lane. Both scores are honest; they are just not the same kind of number.

The state table, read properly

Here are the five highest and five lowest averages, with the median number of reviews per venue next to each:

• Wisconsin — 4.96 average; median of 2 reviews per venue (82 venues)
• Michigan — 4.94 average; median of 2 reviews per venue (123 venues)
• Alabama — 4.94 average; median of 2.5 reviews per venue (70 venues)
• Minnesota — 4.93 average; median of 4 reviews per venue (81 venues)
• Massachusetts — 4.92 average; median of 3 reviews per venue (98 venues)

• New York — 4.69 average; median of 12 reviews per venue (458 venues)
• Texas — 4.69 average; median of 32.5 reviews per venue (1,280 venues)
• California — 4.68 average; median of 43 reviews per venue (2,393 venues)
• Illinois — 4.66 average; median of 48 reviews per venue (782 venues)
• Arizona — 4.63 average; median of 72 reviews per venue (603 venues)

The top five are all states where we list fewer venues and those venues have few reviews; the bottom five include California, Texas and Illinois, the three states where we list the most venues, and their median venue has between 12 and 72 reviews. California alone accounts for 2,393 rated venues and 496,489 reviews. A 4.7 in Phoenix has survived far more scrutiny than a 5.0 in a state where the typical venue has two reviews.

Sport by sport, the same story

The highest-rated activity in our directory is radio-controlled car racing: 4.95 on average across 57 tracks, where the typical track has 2 reviews. At the other end sits bowling, 4.33 across 179 centers whose typical review count is 992, with ice skating just above it at 4.35 (typical review count 240). Bowling alleys are not the least-loved places in America. They are among the most-reviewed: birthday parties, league nights and first dates all leave a score. Among the sports in the middle, gyms average 4.72 across 1,108 venues, tennis 4.66 across 294 and pickleball 4.72 across 306.

How to read a rating before you book

Compare like with like. In the 200-to-999-review band, only 26% of venues hold 4.8 or better, so a 4.8 there is a top-quarter result. Below ten reviews, 89% of venues are at 4.8 or above, which makes the same number close to meaningless. When two places you are choosing between have very different review counts, the one with more reviews and a slightly lower score is often the safer bet. Venue pages on Americano Sports show the review count next to the rating, most show how the Google ratings split from one to five stars, and visitors can add their own rating there.

How we counted

We used the Google rating and review count stored with each of the 10,863 venues in the Americano Sports directory that has at least one review, as of 2026-10-11. Venues that describe themselves as permanently closed, and listings we class as non-sport, are left out. State and sport averages include only groups with at least 50 rated venues (30 states and 46 sports); a venue listed under several sports counts in each. For the best-rated lists, a venue must be listed under the sport and carry a matching Google category. Our directory is selective — since October 2026 the importer skips listings with fewer than five reviews or a rating below 3.0 — so the weakest venues are underrepresented and every average here runs higher than it would across all of Google Maps.
