The Busiest Hour of the Week at U.S. Sports Venues Is 6 p.m. on Tuesday

At 8 a.m. on a Tuesday, the climbing gyms in our directory are close to empty by their own standards. Google’s crowd index for them averages 20.0 out of 100. Eleven hours later, at 7 p.m. the same evening, it reaches 84.0 — the highest reading for any hour of any sport we looked at.

Climbing is the extreme case of a pattern that runs through almost every kind of venue we list. We pulled the hour-by-hour “popular times” pattern from the Google Maps listings of 3,561 sports venues in the Americano Sports directory and averaged them. The single busiest hour of the week, across all of them, is Tuesday at 6 p.m., with an index of 61.4 across 3,390 venues open at that hour. The next three places go to Wednesday, Monday and Thursday at the same hour (60.0, 59.9 and 59.8). Saturday is the busiest day when you average every open hour (50.4), yet the five busiest single hours of the week are all weeknight evenings.

Across the week, the national curve climbs slowly through the day — 41.1 at 8 a.m., 44.8 at noon — then jumps: 50.8 at 4 p.m., 56.9 at 6 p.m., back to 50.4 by 8 p.m.

The after-work sports

For the sports people fit around a job, the week is shaped like a row of evening spikes. Martial arts academies peak on Tuesday at 6 p.m. (77.3, 132 academies), while their mornings sit around 27.8 at 8 a.m. and 30.9 at 10 a.m. Friday (34.5) and Sunday (34.7) are their quietest days.

Gyms follow the same clock with a Monday twist. Across 433 gyms and fitness clubs, the busiest hour is Monday at 6 p.m. (72.5), Monday is the busiest day (50.3) and each day after it is a little quieter until Sunday bottoms out at 41.0. Call it the Monday resolution, fading a little more each day.

Climbing gyms, 38 of them, have the steepest evening rush of all: 27.3 at 10 a.m. on an average day, 66.5 at 7 p.m. Lunchtime climbers have the walls much closer to themselves (32.3 at noon). Each of these venues shows its own hour-by-hour chart on its page — First Ascent Avondale in Chicago, Phoenix Rock Gym in Tempe, Legion American Jiu Jitsu San Diego – HQ, Master Kang's Martial Arts Plano are good places to compare.

The weekend sports

Ice rinks are almost a different country. Their weekday averages hover in the low-to-mid thirties (32.3 on Tuesday, 34.1 on Thursday) and then Saturday arrives: 56.6 for the day, peaking at noon with 69.6 across 56 rinks. Monday at 8 a.m. (14.7) is the lowest daytime reading of any sport we looked at. Bowling runs later: its peak is Saturday at 8 p.m. (75.9, 127 centers), and a Tuesday at 10 a.m. sits at 24.6.

Golf keeps daylight hours. Its busiest hour is Saturday at 2 p.m. (70.3, 133 courses, ranges and simulator venues), and its daily curve tops out in early afternoon — 64.0 at 2 p.m. — rather than after work. Swimming sits between the two worlds: the busiest single hour is Tuesday at 5 p.m. (70.1), but the busiest days are Saturday (59.8) and Sunday (60.2).

You can see these weekend shapes on the charts for Galleria Ice Skating Center in Dallas, The Rinks – Anaheim ICE, Pinheads & Alley’s Alehouse in Fishers, PINSTACK in Irving, Pinehurst Resort, Torrey Pines Golf Course in La Jolla.

The steady ones

Racket sports barely notice the weekend. Tennis venues average between 48.0 and 49.8 on every day of the week (67 venues); pickleball between 46.2 and 50.8 (45 venues). Their peaks are still weeknight evenings — tennis on Wednesday at 6 p.m. (63.6), pickleball on Wednesday at 7 p.m. (68.8) — but Saturday is about as busy as Thursday. Compare Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego, High Point Tennis Center in Plano, The Courts McKinney Pickleball and Tennis Center, PIKL Los Angeles.

Using this

The cheapest way to get a quieter session is to move it, not to change venues. Nationally, 4 p.m. averages 50.8 against 56.9 at 6 p.m.; for climbing the gap between 4 p.m. (47.8) and 7 p.m. (66.5) is wider still. Venue pages on Americano Sports that have a crowd pattern show their own “best time to visit” chart, and the venue finder can show you what is open right now. Browse by sport: climbing, martial arts, gyms, ice skating, bowling, golf, swimming, tennis and pickleball.

How we counted

We used the “popular times” pattern on each venue’s Google Maps listing, as stored with our venue data on 2026-10-11: 3,561 of the 11,212 venues we list have one. Google scores every hour from 0 to 100, where 100 is that venue’s own busiest hour of the week — so the index tells you when a place is busy compared with itself, not how many people are inside, and it cannot be used to say one sport is more crowded than another. We averaged open hours only (a reading of zero means closed or no data) and reported a day-and-hour slot only when at least a fifth of a sport’s venues had a reading for it. A venue counts toward a sport when it is listed under that sport and its Google category agrees (a skatepark tagged “skating” does not count as an ice rink). Venue counts: gyms 433, golf 133, martial arts 132, bowling 127, tennis 67, ice rinks 57, swimming 47, pickleball 45 and climbing 38.
