Keefe expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to coach the Toronto Maple Leafs and acknowledged that it was a childhood dream come true for a boy from Brampton, Ontario. However, he acknowledged that he did not perform well in the playoffs and take responsibility for not helping the team reach their goal. He did not make any excuses and recognized that not getting the job done is part of the reality of the business. He also thanked all the players and support staff for their dedication and believes they will lead the team to success. He ended by reminding Leafs Nation that they deserve to win the Stanley Cup.
In November 2019, Keefe took over as the head coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs, replacing the dismissed Mike Babcock. Keefe had previously served as the coach for the Toronto Marlies, the Maple Leafs’ affiliate team in the American Hockey League, since 2015. In 2018, he led the Marlies to victory in the Calder Cup.

On Thursday, the Toronto Maple Leafs fired head coach Sheldon Keefe from his position.

On Friday, Treliving will be joining president Brendan Shanahan and Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment CEO Keith Pelley in a media conference.

No decision has been reached regarding the remaining members of Toronto’s coaching team, which consists of assistant coaches Manny Malhotra, Dean Chynoweth, and Guy Boucher.
Unfortunately, that specific loss seemed to solidify Keefe’s destiny. Despite the Leafs’ efforts to make a comeback and push for a final game, the team’s consistent lack of success ultimately led management to make a decision for change.

This marks the initial significant change for Treliving since he became a member of Toronto’s team in May of last year. Shanahan had separated from former GM Kyle Dubas, who initially hired Keefe to take over for Babcock and was also responsible for bringing Keefe to the organization while serving as GM for the Marlies. Treliving was then introduced to the role soon after. Prior to the start of last season, Treliving decided to renew Keefe’s contract. He praised Keefe for having a definite plan and guidance for the team’s future direction.

Over the course of 4 and a half seasons in the NHL, Keefe guided the Leafs to a record of 212 wins, 97 losses, and 40 overtime losses. This included two seasons with 50 or more wins each and playoff appearances in every full season. However, Toronto has not been able to achieve success in the postseason under Keefe, being eliminated in the first round in three of the last four seasons, including this year’s Game 7 overtime loss to Boston.
On Thursday, Keefe expressed gratitude to both current and former management of the Maple Leafs in a video shared on social media. He also bid farewell to the team’s fans.

Brad Treliving, the general manager of the Leafs, commented that the decision made today was a tough one. He acknowledged Sheldon as a skilled coach and a wonderful person, but ultimately, a new perspective is necessary to drive the team towards their ultimate objective. Treliving expressed gratitude towards Sheldon for his commitment and efforts in the organization for the past nine years and extended well-wishes to him and his loved ones.
