49ers Quarterback Brock Purdy Faces Doubt After Consecutive Losses
The national narrative surrounding second-year quarterback Brock Purdy has taken a dramatic turn following the San Francisco 49ers’ second consecutive loss on Monday night. ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith, who was once a believer in the young quarterback, has now lost all faith in him.
Speaking on “First Take” on Tuesday morning, Smith expressed his disappointment, saying, “I’ve lost confidence in him because I had a belief in him. In his first 10 regular-season starts, Purdy threw for 20 touchdowns and just two interceptions. We saw potential in him, especially considering the system that Coach Kyle Shanahan had in place. We believed he was the future.”
However, Smith’s opinion has changed due to concerns about Purdy’s arm strength and velocity. He noted that Purdy doesn’t possess the strongest arm and that the absence of reliable targets, such as Deebo Samuel, has compromised his performance.
Purdy’s struggles were evident in the 49ers’ recent 22-17 loss to the Minnesota Vikings, where he threw two interceptions, marking the first multi-interception game of his career.
The 23-year-old quarterback emerged as the 49ers’ starter in 2022 after injuries to Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo. Prior to the team’s Week 6 loss to the Cleveland Browns, Purdy had never lost a game that he started and finished. However, the 49ers’ dominant 5-0 start to the season came to a halt with back-to-back losses in Cleveland and Minneapolis.
