Spain to Host Women’s Handball World Championship in 2029

Spain has been selected to host the women’s handball world championship for the second time in its history, following a successful bid at the International Federation (IHF) council meeting in Créteil. The decision comes after the withdrawal of a joint project between China and Russia, paving the way for Spain to take the reins.

The Spanish Handball Federation’s previous success in organizing the Women’s World Cup in 2021 played a crucial role in securing the 2029 World Cup. President Francisco Blázquez highlighted the organizational achievements of the 2021 event, despite the challenges posed by the pandemic.

Looking ahead to 2029, Blázquez expressed the federation’s commitment to surpassing previous accomplishments and elevating the tournament to new heights. The upcoming championship, scheduled from November 28 to December 16, 2029, will be hosted in cities like Valencia, Málaga, Galicia, and Irún, with a focus on enhancing the handball experience for fans.

Blázquez emphasized the significance of the 2029 World Cup in advancing the development and promotion of women’s handball in Spain. The tournament is poised to serve as a catalyst for growth and innovation within the sport, building on the momentum generated by the 2021 competition.

With the support of key stakeholders and officials, including the Sports Deputy of the Provincial Council of Guipúzcoa and the mayor of Irún, Spain is gearing up to showcase its prowess in handball on the global stage. The upcoming Women’s World Cup in 2029 will complement the Men’s European Championship in 2028, solidifying Spain’s reputation as a hub for elite handball competitions.
