While left fielder Nolan Jones bats left-handed, the rest of the outfielders, including Brenton Doyle, Sean Bouchard, and Hunter Goodman, are right-handed. Even the team’s upper-minors options lean towards right-handed hitters, with the exception of top prospects Zac Veen and Yanquiel Fernandez, who are still a year or more away from the Major Leagues. Franchise stalwart Charlie Blackmon, who was re-signed earlier in the offseason, is expected to primarily serve as the team’s designated hitter in 2024.

While the free-agent market for left-handed outfielders is limited, there are a few intriguing options. Cody Bellinger would be a significant signing, but it is unlikely the Rockies would be willing to meet his price. Joey Gallo could be an interesting choice, although his performance has declined since being traded to the New York Yankees in 2021. Other potential options include Travis Jankowski, Raimel Tapia, and Rafael Ortega, with Tapia and Ortega possibly available on minor league contracts.

The Rockies could also explore trade scenarios to acquire a left-handed outfielder. Possible trade partners could include the Kansas City Royals, Seattle Mariners, and Detroit Tigers, who have promising outfield prospects that could fit the Rockies’ needs. Alternatively, the Rockies could look to claim a player off waivers or make a deal for an out-of-options player who has been squeezed out of their current team’s roster.

While the Rockies have made some offseason acquisitions, their payroll remains uncertain. The team has added approximately $9-10 million in salary with the signings of Dakota Hudson, Jacob Stallings, and Cal Quantrill. However, the Rockies are still expected to operate with a reduced budget for the 2024 season. The departure of players like Brent Suter and the trades of veterans such as C.J. Cron, Randal Grichuk, Brad Hand, and Pierce Johnson have contributed to the team’s financial situation.

With AT&T SportsNet Rocky Mountain ceasing operations, the team’s broadcast situation remains unresolved. While there have been reports that MLB may step in to handle the broadcasts, no formal announcement has been made.

Given the financial constraints and the team’s longshot postseason odds, the Rockies have had a relatively quiet offseason. Instead, they appear to be focusing on in-house development and building for the future. With an eye towards 2025 and beyond, the Rockies are looking to strengthen their roster with a left-handed outfielder while navigating the challenges of their budget and broadcast situation.
