Beverley stated that he has been labeled with many names in the league, but he hasn’t been called that particular one. He acknowledges that it is still unacceptable regardless of what was said and he is committed to improving his behavior.
Patrick Beverley, guard for the Milwaukee Bucks, apologized for his behavior during a recent playoff game in which he threw a ball at a fan in the closing moments, deeming his actions unacceptable.
Beverley commented that he didn’t want to detract from the Indiana fans, whom he praised as “great,” but felt that some went a bit overboard.
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) told CNN in a statement on Wednesday it has opened an investigation into an incident involving an “NBA player and citizen” at Gainbridge Fieldhouse on May 2, the night of the Bucks’ season-ending loss to the Indiana Pacers.
Near the end of Game 6 of the series, Beverley, who was not playing, threw a ball into the crowd and seemingly struck a bystander in the head.
The police report stated that investigators are collaborating with the arena to “examine recorded footage and intend to communicate with those involved.”
The statement stated: “Once the investigation is complete, detectives will present the case to the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office.”
The Bucks suffered a 120-98 defeat, officially ending their journey in the NBA Playoffs.
According to the police statement, the officers filed an initial case report when the incident occurred and have now passed it on to IMPD detectives. These detectives are currently conducting an investigation into the matter and are treating all accusations with utmost seriousness.
The day following the defeat, Bucks coach Doc Rivers condemned Beverley’s behavior as not in alignment with the values of Milwaukee or the team.
Rivers stated, “We are capable of more than that. Pat (Beverley) deeply regrets his actions. He also acknowledges that this is an emotional sport and mistakes are made. Sadly, he is being immediately criticized and his emotions got the best of him.”
Last season, Beverley completed his twelfth year in the league and was transferred to the Bucks from the Philadelphia 76ers in February. During this season, he had an average of 6.2 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 2.9 assists. He is set to become an unrestricted free agent during the upcoming offseason.
