Two current gambling controversies in professional sports are unfolding in starkly different ways. While baseball superstar Shohei Ohtani may escape punishment from Major League Baseball, Jontay Porter of the Toronto Raptors could be facing the maximum penalty from the NBA.
Commissioner Adam Silver recently made a chilling statement regarding Porter’s situation, hinting at the possibility of a permanent ban. Silver stated, “I have an enormous range of discipline available to me. But it’s a cardinal sin, what he’s accused of in the NBA, and the ultimate, extreme option I have is to ban him from the game. That’s the level of authority I have here. Because there’s nothing more serious, I think, around this league when it comes to gambling: betting on our games. And that is a direct player involvement. And so, the investigation is ongoing, but the consequences could be very severe.”
Porter stands accused of deliberately exiting games early to manipulate the outcomes of prop bets placed on the unders. Prop bets present a simple way for an individual player to influence the result of a wager by underperforming intentionally. In Porter’s case, it appears that he chose to leave games prematurely, possibly feigning injury or illness to support his actions.
The severity of the situation raises questions about the extent of Porter’s involvement in the gambling scheme. Did he directly place bets on his under props, or did he use intermediaries such as friends or family members? Alternatively, could someone have incentivized him to leave games early to ensure that the unders hit?
