Prior to becoming the lead assistant for Joe Mazzulla at Boston in the previous summer, Lee worked for five years with two-time NBA Coach of the Year Mike Budenholzer on the Bucks and contributed to their 2021 NBA championship victory.
In 2012, Lee began his career as a coach at Bucknell, where he was recognized as the Patriot League Player of the Year during his final year as a senior in 2010. Following his two-year stint as a professional basketball player overseas, Lee joined Budenholzer’s team as part of the Hawks coaching staff in 2014. He then transferred to the Bucks in 2018 before joining the Celtics last summer.
Lee takes over for Steve Clifford, who retired after the season to take on a front office position. Following a 21-61 season, Charlotte has the opportunity to greatly improve with the return of All-Star point guard LaMelo Ball, the potential re-signing of free agent forward Miles Bridges, and the swift growth of No. 2 draft pick Brandon Miller.
Sources tell ESPN that Charles Lee, an assistant coach for the Boston Celtics, has agreed to a four-year deal to take over as head coach for the Charlotte Hornets.
