Cuban Men’s Handball Team Shines in North American and Caribbean Championship

May 7, 2024

The Cuban men’s handball team continues to impress in the North American and Caribbean Championship, held in Mexico City. With a mix of established players in Europe and young stars, the team is making waves in the competition.

After a dominant 34-17 victory over Puerto Rico in their debut match, the Cuban team secured another impressive win with a 40-24 triumph against the Canadian team. This success solidifies their position as one of the favorites to secure the only spot available for the 2025 world championship.

Leading the charge for Cuba is the experienced Hansel Rodríguez, who scored seven times in the recent victory and proved to be the most valuable player on the court.

Looking ahead, the Cuban team is set to face Greenland, the United States, and Mexico in their upcoming matches. The outcome of these games will determine their path to the world championship, with the top two teams vying for the coveted title on May 12.

While the United States has already secured a spot in the world event through an invitation from the International Handball Federation, Cuba is determined to earn their place through their performance in the ongoing championship.

With nations like Brazil, Argentina, France, Germany, and Sweden already confirmed to compete in the upcoming World Championships in Croatia, Denmark, and Norway, the competition is heating up.

The Cuban men’s handball team’s last participation in global events dates back to 2009, where they finished in 20th place. With their current form and determination, they are poised to make a strong comeback on the international stage.
