Surviving a Bus Accident: The Resilience of Three Sorel Baseball Players
On April 23, 2024, a bus carrying dozens of Quebec baseball players, including three young athletes from Sorel-Tracy, experienced a terrifying ordeal in Virginia. The bus, en route to a baseball training camp in Florida, veered off course and crashed into a tree in Emporia, Greensville County.
The three Sorel baseball players, Pierre-Carl Gendron, Charles Dionne, and Julien Paquin, found themselves in the midst of chaos in the middle of the night. Despite the harrowing experience, they managed to escape physically unharmed, unlike one of their coaches, Yannick Powers, who sustained serious injuries in the accident.
Reflecting on the incident, Pierre-Carl’s father, Carl Gendron, expressed his gratitude that the outcome was not more severe. He recounted the fear and confusion that gripped the passengers as the bus careened off the road, with glass shattering and bags strewn about.
As the investigation into the cause of the accident continues, one theory being explored is that the driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel, underscoring the importance of driver alertness and safety protocols on long journeys.

Following the crash, the passengers were swiftly taken to a nearby hotel, where they received support and assistance. The young baseball players, along with other occupants of the bus, embarked on a 30-hour journey back to Quebec, where they were welcomed with open arms and offered psychological help to cope with the trauma they had endured.
