Spencer Strider’s Season-Ending Surgery: A New Chapter for the Atlanta Braves

One week after Spencer Strider was diagnosed with elbow damage following an MRI, the Atlanta Braves’ ace underwent season-ending surgery. The Braves announced that Strider had the internal brace procedure to repair the UCL in his right elbow, performed by Dr. Keith Meister in Arlington, TX.

The internal brace procedure, as noted by The Athletic’s Cody Stavenhagen, differs from Tommy John surgery in that it reinforces the existing UCL with a tape-like suture anchored into the humerus and ulna. This innovative approach allows athletes to return to throwing approximately six months after the procedure.

However, orthopedic surgeon Eric Bowman cautioned that MLB pitchers may not be ideal candidates for the internal brace procedure due to the quality of tissue at the major league level. While the brace can help relieve stress, it may not reliably heal bad tissue, necessitating a graft in some cases.

Notably, Boston Red Sox pitcher Lucas Giolito, who previously underwent elbow reconstruction surgery, opted for the internal brace procedure in March. Giolito highlighted the high rate of recovery associated with the brace compared to undergoing a second Tommy John surgery.

Strider’s journey with elbow injuries dates back to his Tommy John surgery in 2019 while playing for Clemson. His recent MRI revealed damage to the UCL, prompting the season-ending surgery. Despite a decrease in fastball velocity this season, Strider’s impressive performance in 2023, finishing fourth in NL Cy Young voting, showcases his potential for a strong comeback in the future.

As the Braves navigate Strider’s recovery and absence from the mound, the team faces challenges in maintaining their competitive edge. The impact of Strider’s absence on the pitching rotation and overall team dynamics will be closely monitored as they strive for success in the 2024 season.
