The Future of Baseball in Montreal: A Dream Worth Pursuing

As the 25th season of the Capitales approaches, the conversation around the need for a baseball team in Montreal has gained momentum. Manager Patrick Scalabrini and co-owner Michel Laplante are both in agreement that it’s time for Montreal to have its own team.

A City Divided by Rivalry

The rivalry between Quebec and Montreal is well-known, especially in the realm of sports. Scalabrini emphasizes the success of Quebec as a baseball market and believes that Montreal should not be left behind.

“It remains unthinkable for me that there is still nothing in Montreal when we look at the success of Quebec as a baseball market,” argued Scalabrini.

Overcoming Obstacles

Laplante acknowledges that the main obstacle to bringing a team to Montreal lies in the political and private will to build a suitable stadium. He highlights the importance of viewing the project as a community endeavor rather than just a professional baseball team.

“A city in the Montreal region will have to understand to what extent this is a project that is more community than simply professional baseball,” stated Laplante.

A Vision for the Future

Reflecting on the 25 years of the Capitales, Scalabrini expresses his attachment to the team while also contemplating the possibility of venturing into affiliated baseball in the future.

“The big-ass dream is still there. I’m interested, but I’m not sure it’s going to happen and if it doesn’t happen, that would be okay too,” Scalabrini shared.

Despite the challenges and uncertainties, the idea of bringing a baseball team to Montreal remains a tantalizing prospect. With the right vision, determination, and community support, the dream of baseball thriving in Montreal could soon become a reality.
