NEW YORK (AP) — The Yankees have embraced a fresh atmosphere as they prepare for their first World Series appearance since 2009.
Baseball’s most historically rooted franchise, characterized by its majestic granite-and-limestone stadium and timeless pinstriped uniforms, which have remained largely unchanged since 1936, has introduced a vibrant touch: Statue of Liberty green.
“I’ve been in search of a little accent color, and I believe the Statue of Liberty and its symbolism for the city and state is a fitting choice,” remarked captain Aaron Judge, the instigator of this colorful trend.
Despite being the major leagues’ most conservatively dressed team during a time when personal expression is celebrated—Yankees players are still prohibited from growing long hair or facial hair due to a policy established by owner George Steinbrenner in 1976—this year’s squad represents a shift away from the rigidity of previous teams. Whether it’s Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Alex Verdugo showcasing flashy jewelry or Juan Soto stepping up to the plate with a dembow track named after his trademark “Soto Shuffle,”, this year’s team feels less stuffy compared to its predecessors.
All across the lineup, the mint green accents are a clear testament to this new attitude. You’ll find it on cleats, chest protectors, batting gloves, sliding mitts, as well as on wrist and elbow guards. This is a team that proudly embraces its statue-like appearance, at least in terms of style.
Judge stands as the Yankees’ foremost influencer; when he embraces green, the rest of the squad is sure to follow.
Reliever Jake Cousins recalled his first encounter with the Yankees while at the team hotel in Phoenix, shortly after his acquisition on March 31, the season’s fourth day.
“I hopped on the bus, headed to the back, greeted everyone with a simple ’What’s up?’ and then sat quietly,” Cousins said. “When we arrived at the stadium—Judge always takes a seat at the front—Judge got off first. He waited for me on the side, as I was the last to disembark, and he said, ‘Hey, man, welcome to the team. If you need anything, I’m here for you.’ That truly reflects his leadership.”
At 32 and poised to secure his second AL MVP Award, Judge leads the Yankees into the World Series, beginning Friday against the Los Angeles Dodgers. After joining the Yankees in 2013 and making his big league debut three years later, he was named the team’s first captain since Derek Jeter in December 2022.
“Having been part of the Yankees organization for quite some time, I admired how the veteran players conducted themselves, and I wanted to emulate that,” Judge expressed. “My goal is to continue that tradition and guide our younger players on how things work here because the sooner they feel comfortable and part of the team, the better they’ll perform and contribute to our victories.”
Yankees manager Aaron Boone noted the sense of camaraderie that blossomed when players began arriving at the minor league facility in Tampa, Florida, last January, well ahead of spring training. Five of the 26 players on the active roster for the AL Championship Series clincher were not present during the start of spring training and adjusted after joining the group.
Aligning with the tonal theme, Nestor Cortes even designed a mint glove adorned with a navy torch, an orange flame representing the Statue of Liberty, and “Hialeah Kid” elegantly stitched into the leather on the index finger’s back. The left-hander reached out to 44 Pro, his equipment supplier, on April 26 to place a special order.
“I mentioned that everyone was using mint-colored gloves and accessories and suggested incorporating something New York-themed, like a torch,” Cortes recounted.
Graphic designer Trey Miasek quickly went to work, and Cortes sported the flashy glove during a standout performance where he pitched six scoreless innings against Baltimore on June 18.
“Yankees are known for having the strictest policies in MLB regarding facial hair, piercings, or hairstyles,” noted Benny Miller, Pro44’s glove product line manager. “So, it was quite surprising to see them embrace the mint color.”
Cortes eventually had to retire the glove after MLB ruled that the flame could be distracting for batters.
Chisholm has brought additional excitement to the team since he was acquired from Miami on July 27. The infielder is a co-owner of his glove company, Absolutely Ridiculous Innovation for Athletes (ARIA), and had a staff member deliver appropriately colored gear for his Yankees debut at Fenway Park on July 28.
For the World Series, Chisholm has prepared two new gloves in navy blue with metallic gold details—one showcasing 27 flames and the other featuring 27 pennants, representing the Yankees’ record championship count.
Chisholm, whose full name is Jasrado, has also influenced the musical atmosphere at Yankee Stadium. When he fouls off a pitch, the organist occasionally plays Kander and Ebb’s “All That Jazz” from the 1975 Broadway musical “Chicago” and Paul Desmond’s hit jazz piece “Take Five,” popularized by the Dave Brubeck Quartet.
“He brings an incredible amount of energy and flair to the park each day — a lightness and a smile,” said manager Boone. “He’s embraced our team, and they have warmly welcomed him in return.
