From late August to mid-September, Watkins Glen and its surrounding region will transform into a racing paradise, extending the tourism season into the summer’s final days, according to Dawn Burlew, president of Watkins Glen International.
The Hilliard U.S. Vintage Grand Prix is set to take place at WGI from Aug. 22-25, celebrating the rich history of motorsport along with the iconic vehicles and personalities that helped shape the sport. The weekend’s on-track activities will also feature the Trans-Am Championship.
Following that, the Watkins Glen Grand Prix Festival is scheduled for Sept. 6, bringing an influx of customers and racecar enthusiasts to the downtown area as it fills with excitement.
The month will conclude with the Go Bowling at the Glen Weekend on Sept. 11-15, taking place about a month later than NASCAR’s typical annual event at the Finger Lakes.
WGI NASCAR ticket sales remain strong
Since 1986, NASCAR has made its annual visit to Watkins Glen International in August. This year, however, the stock car series has postponed WGI’s event by one month, electing to incorporate the track’s 2.45-mile short course into the festivities.

Burlew noted that attending a NASCAR race at Watkins Glen International is a dream for many, but the race itself is merely a part of the overall experience.
Concerts are scheduled for Thursday, Friday, and Saturday throughout the Go Bowling at the Glen Weekend, alongside several innovations and enhancements to the WGI fan zone.
“This event significantly boosts the local economy,” Burlew stated.

“We consider this change as an opportunity to prolong the tourist season,” Burlew stated. “By mid-September, our hotels will be bustling with NASCAR visitors, while in August, the local wineries and breweries will attract their own crowds. it’s truly beneficial for everyone.”
