Welcome to SB Nation Reacts, a survey capturing the sentiments of NFL fans. Throughout the year, we pose questions to the most engaged Washington Commanders supporters and fans from across the nation. Sign up here to take part in regular email surveys.
This week’s Reacts survey features two questions.
Question 1
I noticed someone expressing enthusiastic praise for the Commanders’ performance against the Jets in their first preseason game, accompanied by a statement filled with renewed optimism for the upcoming season. The rather flat response was, “Imagine if they had won.”
People tend to see what they wish to see, or so I’ve heard. After a reportedly challenging outing for the Commanders during last week’s joint practice in Florham Park, some fans pointed to Jayden Daniels’ inaugural NFL drive at Met Life Stadium—consisting of 11 plays and 70 yards, including a 42-yard precise completion to a closely covered Dyami Brown, culminating in a touchdown for No. 5—as proof that Adam Peters and Dan Quinn are on their way to building a winner. Others, however, noted that the Jets featured only one starter (offensively) that day and that they ultimately won the game. They viewed this as an indication that the roster created by Adams and Quinn remains a paper tiger, in dire need of further development before it can truly compete for anything significant.
For our first question today, we want to know how you feel—better, worse, or the same—compared to before the Commanders’ road trip to New Jersey.
Question 2
Surprises can be either positive or negative.
After months of speculation regarding the 91 players on the Commanders’ roster, we finally had the opportunity to see them compete against opponents in different jerseys. We all understand that some players can shine in shorts but may falter in pads—or vice versa. In today’s training camps, where tackling one’s own teammates is typically avoided, determining how well the defense can tackle or which offensive players can break tackles is a challenge. Who will emerge victorious in matchups between receivers and defensive backs at the line of scrimmage or during the catch? How will a quarterback respond to a live rush from 300-pound defensive linemen eager to disrupt?
Preseason games present the initial opportunity to address many of these questions.
During a press conference on Monday, Dan Quinn pointed out several rookies he felt performed well in Saturday’s game.
Players highlighted by Dan Quinn for their performance against the Jets:
TE Ben Sinnott
S Tyler Owens
RB Michael Wiley— Nicki Jhabvala (@NickiJhabvala) August 12, 2024
In our second question today, we ask you to select one player from a list of seven whose performance took you by surprise the most. I have included three players mentioned by the head coach and omitted an “other” option. If my selection does not resonate with you, feel free to skip the question or present your alternative player choice in the comments.
Comments & Results
We encourage you to answer the survey questions provided below. Additionally, please feel free to elaborate on your responses and share your insights in the comments section. I take those comments into account when discussing the survey results, which will be featured in a separate article in the coming days.
