AMARILLO, Texas (KVII) — Cathy Ice carried her desire to help people from the army into her work as a government contractor. It wasn’t enough though; she craved more direct impact, leading her to join Team Rubicon. “The cleanup is nasty and stinky,” Ice said, ”but someone has to do it. What better group of people than veterans working together as a team to get things cleaned up?”
Ice has seen firsthand the devastating effects of disasters and the crucial support required afterward.
“Hurricane Ian hit in late September of 2022,” she explained. “It devastated Fort Myers, Florida, and then flooded much of the state. My first deployment was in October ’22 to Daytona Beach and Fort Meade. We were cleaning up houses, removing debris from parks, and dealing with muck outs and downed trees.”
Now, Ice’s name will be featured alongside other veterans on the number 3 car driven by Austin Dillon during Sunday’s Nascar Cup Series Championship race.
“I initially thought it was a joke when I received the email,” she admitted. “To be honest, I don’t follow Nascar much at all; all I know is that it involves racecars going around in circles.” She said, when she realized it was real, the honor of making a difference felt incredible.
“Oh god, no, this is never about me,” Ice emphasized. “It’s always about helping others, especially those less fortunate.”
