Sourdeval Considers Sale of former Treasury Building to Local Supermarket
The town of Sourdeval, france, is weighing a proposal to sell its former treasury building to a local supermarket owner, a move that could lead to expansion and job creation.
Treasury Building Valuation Sparks Debate
During a recent town council meeting on March 27, 2025, Mayor Adrien Jehenne discussed the potential sale of the former treasury building, which had been appraised by the government land service. The valuation came in at €136,000.
The building consists of a former commercial space and offices on the ground floor, with additional offices and an attic space on the upper levels. The entire property spans approximately 200 square meters on a 476 square meter plot.
Supermarket Expansion Proposal Includes Job Creation
julien Chatelais, the manager of the local U Supermarket, has offered to purchase the building for €100,000. Chatelais plans to expand the supermarket’s retail space from 550 to 850 square meters. The project includes creating a new laboratory, adding a drive-through service, and generating three to four new jobs. Chatelais also intends to develop rental housing on the upper floors of the treasury building.
Council Divided on Sales Price
While council members generally supported the project, some expressed concern about the offered price.Councilor Daniel Salle suggested the price should be further discussed. While recognizing those concerns, Mayor jehenne cautioned against deterring a potential investor, noting the employment opportunities the expansion could bring. Deputy Mayor François Mestres echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the potential job creation benefits.
Other councilors insisted on adhering to the government land service appraisal. As a compromise, Mayor Jehenne recommended a counteroffer of €118,000 to avoid losing the investment. A vote was held with 16 council members voting for the original €136,000 valuation and 11 voting for the reduced €118,000 offer.
Decision Deferred to Future Meeting
Ultimately, the council decided to revisit the sale of the former treasury building at a future meeting.
