Cody Williams has not yet competed in a regular season NBA game; however, Tuesday night’s experience felt very much like one.
During the rookie forward’s matchup with the Sacramento Kings, alongside his Utah Jazz teammates, the atmosphere on the Delta Center floor transformed what would generally be considered an unimportant exhibition into something far more significant.
“It felt like a genuine NBA game; everyone elevated their defensive play, and the competitiveness increased, which made it enjoyable,” Williams shared with reporters following Utah’s 117-114 win. “The crowd was engaged, and the environment was fantastic. We were aware that the game would be physical, but the atmosphere truly made it feel like a real NBA game, even while still in the preseason.”
For the most part, both teams utilized their probable regular season lineups, with the starters receiving more playing time than in prior preseason matchups and remaining on the court through the tense fourth quarter.
“This was the first preseason game where the entire experience genuinely felt like an NBA game,” said Utah head coach Will Hardy after the match. “It’s beneficial for our group to experience that. Winning feels great, but what I’m most pleased with is the team’s mental resilience and their determination to keep fighting.”

The late-game excitement afforded Williams — selected as the No. 10 overall pick in this June’s draft — the opportunity to gain experience during crucial moments, as he played alongside four Jazz starters during the decisive final stretch to secure the victory.
“I think he performed exceptionally well,” Hardy remarked regarding Williams’ fourth-quarter contributions. “His wisdom in those critical moments truly stands out and typically positions him correctly.”
Utah’s shooting performance was impressive, achieving an impressive 53.5% from the field, alongside 40% from three-point range and 90% from the free-throw line, marking a successful night where they met the 50-40-90 benchmark.
Conversely, the 24 turnovers committed by the Jazz were concerning, as they allowed Sacramento to take 34 additional shot attempts. “We’re just too relaxed with the ball… That really puts you at a disadvantage, especially against a fast-paced team like that,” Hardy explained.
Keyonte George, making his return to action after a knee injury sustained last week in Dallas, was the leading scorer for Utah, contributing 24 points, shooting at 50% from the field, and providing five assists.
Most notably, he demonstrated that there were no lingering issues regarding his health, showcasing his explosiveness and executing the team’s offense with full confidence against the increased physicality from opponents.
“He dedicated his summer to improving his shooting discipline,” Hardy highlighted regarding George. “Keyonte is a player who relies on feel; he can find his rhythm and that’s how he can heat up quickly. We’re helping him establish habits for greater consistency. He worked hard this summer. Keyonte has a passion for basketball like few I’ve encountered.”
Seven Jazz players scored nine points or more, featuring Lauri Markkanen with 21 points, Collin Sexton with 16 points and six assists, and Walker Kessler contributing 10 points, nine rebounds, and four blocks.
Utah will play its last preseason game on Friday in Portland before starting the regular season at home against the Memphis Grizzlies on October 23.
“My overall feeling is that, even though it’s very early in the season and we have a lot of young players still determining their roles, it feels cohesive as a team,” Hardy noted. “Every player on the court is playing a part in our performance. While some get to handle the ball more often, everyone is engaged. I believe each player had a moment tonight, which fosters a good environment. That’s how you cultivate a culture and energy where everyone feels involved.
“… We have a week ahead of opening night to adjust and refine aspects of our gameplay, but I feel very satisfied with where the group stands right now.”
