The Meta Quest 3 headset offers an exceptional way to dive into virtual worlds — it’s my preferred method to enjoy Microsoft Flight Simulator, for instance — yet many remain unaware of its impressive augmented reality capabilities.
Recently, I had the opportunity to try out the Real Racer remote control car, which has launched an app enabling it to be controlled using the Meta Quest 3. This combination elevated both the top-tier VR headset and the car itself, resulting in a remarkable AR experience. Here’s how it all works and what I discovered.
The Real Racer operates effectively on its own as a fun toy priced at $150. It features a 720p camera positioned above the windshield that transmits video via Wi-Fi to a smartphone app. Additionally, the car includes a headset so you can mount your phone inside for a first-person view while navigating around your home.
Alongside the car comes a remote control equipped with a simple trigger for forward and reverse movement, plus a side wheel for steering. Unfortunately, four AAA batteries needed for remote operation aren’t included in the package; furthermore, I noticed that the steering wheel detached quite easily.
However, pairing this car with the Meta Quest 3 completely transformed my experience.
