The Orioles are on a two-game losing streak against the Guardians and are seeking to shake things up with an, well, unconventional lineup. Typically, I find lineup debates tiresome, but I did a double take when I spotted this one. Here are some observations, along with the disclaimer that none of us truly understand what’s happening with each player on any given day.
Adley Rutschman is taking the day off. Although he usually gets plenty of rest days and has been struggling for a while now, he typically performs well against left-handed pitchers—and tonight’s starter fits that description. They often designate him as the designated hitter when facing a lefty to incorporate James McCann’s right-handed bat into the game. However, tonight they have newly acquired Oriole Eloy Jiménez at DH instead. While that makes sense—after all, that’s why he’s here—I believe Adley could remain in his role behind the plate.
Another new addition to the Orioles is Austin Slater, who will be starting in place of Cedric Mullins (with Colton Cowser shifting over to center field). Mullins has been performing exceptionally well at bat over the past month but has struggled significantly against lefties. Slater has logged only 109 plate appearances this season and hasn’t fared well overall; however, he boasts a career OPS of .799 against southpaws. So… I suppose? Though I’d prefer to see Mullins play instead. But why is he hitting leadoff? LEADOFF?
On another note regarding batting order: Why is our best hitter occupying the seventh position? Cowser may be a lefty batter—but seventh? He holds an OPS of .942 over the last month.
Fortunately, there isn’t much else to critique in this lineup comparatively speaking. I’m pleased to see both Coby Mayo and Jackson Holliday making their return today; Holliday reached base three times yesterday via two hits and a walk while Mayo didn’t record a hit in his MLB debut but managed two walks.
It’s interesting how whenever I’m feeling particularly down about our lineup choices, it tends to perform surprisingly well—that gives me hope it might not turn out so bad after all.
Zach Eflin is set for his second start as an Oriole; although his debut wasn’t disastrous per se, I’m hoping for better results today. Allowing three runs over six innings offers your team an opportunity for victory—which they capitalized on in his last outing—but it’s not exactly awe-inspiring either. Personally, I’d appreciate something more impressive tonight.
Opposing him will be left-hander Joey Cantillo making just his second Major League appearance for the Guardians. On July 28th versus Philadelphia, he surrendered three runs across 3.1 innings while walking three batters and giving up two home runs—according to MLB Pipeline reports he’s ranked as their #9 prospect.
