Yet, somehow, the 2024 Orioles may have done just that on Friday night against the Tigers. For months, they seemed destined for a performance akin to Friday’s — nearly on the receiving end of a perfect game and one out away from a no-hitter — and the moment finally arrived.

The Orioles (83-65) have been hovering around the .500 mark since June 2. They are closer to losing the top wild-card spot than to winning the American League East, with only 14 games remaining.

“The second half has been tough offensively,” Hyde said. “Several players are experiencing struggles for the first time in their careers. We’re a young team, and there are various factors at play. However, we must do our utmost with the roster we currently have.”
Following Friday’s defeat, Henderson sought to highlight a silver lining. The 23-year-old star recognizes that the best teams — the ones that ultimately secure championships — are “battle-tested.” Whether the challenges these Orioles have faced will benefit them in October remains uncertain, but it is undeniable that they have been tested.
“Last year, we didn’t experience this, as we weren’t swept at all,” he said. “This year, we need to play a bit grittier and more united. Clearly, this isn’t where we want to be right now, but I believe it only takes one spark for us to get back on track.”
