Over 1,000 Athletes Converge on Ponferrada for University Championship Finals
PONFERRADA, Spain – The city of Ponferrada is hosting the final phase of the Trofeo Rector of Castilla y León, a regional university sports competition. Over 1,000 athletes from nine universities across Castilla y León are competing for titles in various sports.
Universities Compete in Regional Tournament
The universities participating include the University of Burgos,the University of León,the University of Salamanca,the University of Valladolid,the Universidad Europea Miguel de Cervantes,the Pontifical University of Salamanca,IE University of Segovia,the Catholic University of Ávila,and the Isabel I University of Burgos. Thes institutions are battling for supremacy in basketball, handball, soccer, futsal (indoor soccer), volleyball, paddle tennis, chess, badminton, table tennis, and tennis.

The Trofeo Rector has seen increased participation—the 156 teams include 75 men’s teams, 64 women’s teams, and 17 mixed teams, competing across more than 250 matches over two weekends.
Expanded Sporting Events Include Cross-Country and Orienteering
Beyond the main events in Ponferrada, the Trofeo Rector also includes competitions tailored to outdoor environments. The cross-country final took place on March 8 in Ólvega, Soria.Orienteering is scheduled for May 10 in Quintanar de la Sierra, Burgos.
