Tragically, former Premier League player George Baldock has passed away at the age of 31.
The former Sheffield United defender was discovered dead in his swimming pool in Greece on Wednesday, as reported by local media.
This summer, he relocated to Greece to further his club career, signing with one of the country’s prominent teams, Panathinaikos, after leaving Sheffield United.
The defender had an extensive tenure at Bramall Lane, where he made 219 appearances over a span of seven years.
So far this season, he has participated in four matches for Panathinaikos, with his latest game occurring on October 6.
A statement issued by the Greek Super League expressed: “The entire Super League football community shares its profound sadness regarding the untimely passing of our national team player, George Baldock, as we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.”
Baldock began his career at MK Dons, where he played alongside his brother Sam.
He also played for Oxford United, Tamworth, and Northampton Town before making the switch to Sheffield United in 2017.
The defender was instrumental in the club’s remarkable Premier League campaign in 2019/20, during which they finished an impressive 9th.
Baldock made 83 appearances in the Premier League for Sheffield United before his departure this summer.
He was not included in the Greece squad for this international window, where he had the opportunity to face England on Thursday.

Baldock was not part of the national team for the September matches against Finland and Ireland due to injury.
Harry Maguire was among those who responded to the unfortunate news.
The Manchester United and England defender posted a tribute on Instagram featuring a photo of Baldock, along with the words ‘RIP’ and a broken heart emoji.
Sheffield United also honored their former defender with a heartfelt message on social media.

“Sheffield United Football Club expresses its shock and sorrow upon the news of the passing of former player, George Baldock,” the club stated.
“The defender departed the club last summer, following a seven-year tenure at Bramall Lane, and was a favorite among supporters, staff, and teammates who donned the red and white stripes along with him.
“Our heartfelt condolences go out to George’s family and friends from everyone connected with Sheffield United.”
