Who had former All-Star Jeff Teague predicted to become an MVP-level podcaster in the NBA?
WNBA Playoffs on the Horizon
Three questions with Ben Pickman
Before diving into NBA discussions, I’m enlisting the insights of WNBA writer Ben Pickman from The Athletic to examine some of the major narratives as the regular season concludes. With playoffs approaching, it’s essential to look at the broader context, so let’s hear Ben’s thoughts as we gear up for the postseason.
With MVP frontrunner A’ja Wilson setting a new WNBA single-season scoring record, what kind of playoff performance can we expect from the Aces as they aim for a three-peat?
Ben: Wilson has undeniably been the most dominant player in the WNBA this season, possibly having the most remarkable campaign in the league’s history. (As of Sunday, she was averaging 27 points and 12.1 rebounds per game.) However, the Las Vegas Aces enter the playoffs with more uncertainties compared to previous years. Last season, they had the best defense in the WNBA, but they have dropped to fifth in rankings for 2024. In 2022 and 2023, they were the league’s top-performing team in first quarters with net ratings exceeding plus-14.5. This season, they only hold a modest plus-1.9 net rating in the initial quarter. Even though Chelsea Gray, Jackie Young, and Kelsey Plum represented the United States in the Olympics, their performances have not matched their previous effectiveness. Can Las Vegas secure a third consecutive title? Definitely. Yet, the Aces aren’t performing at the same level as in earlier years, and they face the New York Liberty in the semifinals, where the Liberty will have home-court advantage.
The one. The Only. A’ja Wilson 👑
A look back at some of A’ja Wilson’s toughest buckets throughout the szn that helped her become the first player in WNBA history to score 1,000 points in a single season#WelcometotheW pic.twitter.com/vARRmDTWP1

Still writing HER-story 🖋️
With just two games left in the regular season, A’ja Wilson achieved her 1,000th point of the year, making her the first player in league history to score 1,000 points in a single season.

What predictions do you have for the other WNBA awards?
Ben: With only a week left, there’s still much that could shift in the award race. However, it appears that Lynx’s coach Cheryl Reeve is on track to secure her fourth Coach of the Year honor, which would set her apart from Mike Thibault and Van Chancellor as the only coach with that many. Caitlin Clark is the frontrunner for Rookie of the Year, while Wilson remains the favorite for MVP. Personally, I find the Most Improved Player of the Year race to be particularly intriguing.
Is there a dark horse playoff team that contenders should worry about?
Ben: Beyond the Aces, keep an eye on the Fever as a squad that no one wants to face in the playoffs. Before their back-to-back losses to the Aces last week, Indiana had claimed victory in eight of their first ten games in the second half and boasted a net rating of plus-6.1, the third-best in the league. All-Star guard Kelsey Mitchell has been averaging 24.4 points per game since the All-Star break, ranking second in the league, while Caitlin Clark is third in scoring with 23.4 points and leads with nine assists per game since the season resumed. Add All-Star center Aliyah Boston into the mix, and Indiana becomes a formidable opponent, especially considering the enthusiastic fans that accompany them across the nation.
The Latest From Shams
Lakers secure center; Morris makes his return to New York
Out West, the Lakers have reached an agreement with seven-footer Christian Koloko, according to Klutch Sports agent Calvin Andrews. The 24-year-old Koloko will have a chance to contribute to the Lakers’ frontcourt once he receives approval from the league’s fitness panel.
In New York, the Knicks have finalized a one-year contract with veteran forward Marcus Morris, as reported by agent Yony Boy of LAA Partners to The Athletic. The 14-year veteran posted a 40.3 percent shooting percentage from beyond the arc while playing for both the 76ers and the Cavaliers. Morris is returning to the Knicks, where he started 43 games during the 2019-20 season, averaging nearly 20 points.
Can the Celtics Achieve Back-to-Back Titles?
Would mark the first repeat champions since 2018
Though it’s too soon to discuss whether the Celtics could establish a dynasty, the current conditions suggest they have a solid opportunity. Pursuing consecutive championships would be a significant milestone in that conversation.
The Celtics can draw confidence from their victory in the 2023-24 title and the frustrations experienced by their two star players over the summer. This added motivation could assist Boston in navigating any challenges during the regular season.
Jayson Tatum won gold with the United States Olympic team, although his playing time was limited. Last season, Tatum earned a spot on the All-NBA First Team, but he found himself behind LeBron James and Kevin Durant on the depth chart.
Team USA’s depth chart has seen some shifts, as Jaylen Brown, who clinched the Finals MVP, was overlooked for the spot vacated by Kawhi Leonard. Instead, his Boston Celtics teammate, Derrick White, was selected.

If both players can channel the intensity of a duo that has yet to establish their legacy, it could enhance Boston’s championship prospects. Teams that have already claimed titles sometimes require new mental hurdles to maintain their focus.
Kristaps Porziņģis may return from ankle surgery as soon as December, positioning the Celtics to feature the best starting lineup in the NBA—unless another team emerges to challenge that assertion. And even if that occurs, shouldn’t the reigning champions have the advantage in a close competition?
While the Eastern Conference is expected to be more challenging, the Celtics remain the frontrunners to return to the NBA Finals.
If Boston Can’t Repeat …
Could these four teams claim the throne?
Miami, if Jimmy Butler can overpower Boston? Can Minnesota discover their groove? Is it premature for Oklahoma City? Did Dallas merely experience a fortunate season? What if one of the original Olympic teams—like LeBron’s Lakers, KD’s Suns, or Steph Curry’s Warriors—finds their rhythm?
Oh, how thrilling it is to speculate in September! Here are four teams likely to derail Boston’s aspirations for consecutive titles:
- 76ers: Yes, I acknowledge: Joel Embiid has yet to advance beyond the second round in the playoffs. Additionally, I understand that many doubt 34-year-old Paul George’s postseason capabilities (though he has reached the conference finals three times). Nevertheless, I have faith in Tyrese Maxey and his potential growth as a player. This trio could pose challenges for Boston, particularly with Embiid at the center position.
- Nuggets: I am hesitant about Denver’s prospects without Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, as their depth was questionable last season. This note is a tribute to Nikola Jokić, for a better-rounded team can falter against an opponent with the top player. Jokić would undoubtedly be that standout player in the series.
- Bucks: This presumes that Giannis Antetokounmpo will finally achieve good health during the postseason. His ability to dominate a series could help overcome Boston’s depth. With timely contributions from Damian Lillard, the Bucks might return to the NBA Finals for the first time since 2021.
- Knicks: This situation hinges solely on Julius Randle’s performance. From January 1 to January 27, after OG Anunoby was incorporated into the lineup, New York’s offensive efficiency shot up by 10 points with Randle on the court (accruing 491 minutes). Without him, Jalen Brunson and a mix of grit players cannot hope to match the Celtics’ talent.
