According to NBA.com’s John Schuhmann, the gap between the first and second positions was the third-largest since 1996.
This defense led to Minnesota securing their first playoff series victories in two decades. However, their progress was halted by the Mavericks, who restricted Anthony Edwards to 40% shooting in the paint, compelled him to pass on 46% of his drives, and challenged his teammates to outperform them. Unfortunately, they could not. Minnesota only managed to score 112.1 points per 100 against Dallas, a rate that would have placed them 24th in offensive efficiency during the regular season.
Timberwolves president Tim Connelly recently remarked on the harsh competition in the West during an interview with Darren Wolfson of KSTP-TV: “The West is incredibly tough. It often comes down to just a shot here or there, as well as player health — so much hinges on matchups and availability. Our aim is to maintain a seat at the big table.”
This sets the stage for the blockbuster trade…
of Towns, Minnesota’s second-highest scorer from last season, adds another layer of intrigue. Does trading KAT for Randle and DiVincenzo assist Minnesota in remaining ”at the big table” this season?
The positive perspective likely arises from two key beliefs. First, that the current Sixth Man of the Year, Naz Reid, can replicate a more substantial portion of KAT’s output than one might expect, and at a significantly lower price. (At least until he becomes eligible for a contract extension, which he’ll be after the season, a deal that the Wolves will most likely extend, albeit still well below what Towns will earn on his supermax.)
The second belief is that Minnesota’s offense urgently requires enhanced shot creation — a player, apart from Edwards, capable of penetrating defenses and generating quality shots.
This need drove Connelly to trade a couple of promising future picks to move up and select Rob Dillingham from Kentucky. However, 165-pound, 19-year-old players seldom play significant roles for playoff-bound teams. Thus, Randle enters the picture as a more effective facilitator than Towns, having posted a superior assist percentage and a lower turnover rate over the last five seasons.
Although he occasionally resorts to stubborn spin moves into heavy traffic, Randle has demonstrated greater skill in attackers off the dribble, drawing defensive attention and facilitating for his teammates. Since 2020, While checking drives and skillful deliveries, a significant number of possessions ended with a clang. Throughout his nine years in Minnesota, Towns managed to make fewer than 36% of his 3-pointers only once, while Randle has surpassed the 36% mark just once in his nine professional seasons. Even if Mike Conley Jr. matches his career-high 44.2% 3-point shooting and DiVincenzo maintains the significant improvement he demonstrated last season as a long-range shooter, Finch may struggle to create sufficient half-court spacing in lineups featuring Gobert, Randle, and McDaniels, making it difficult for Edwards to find the room to operate.
This is the last thing Minnesota requires: further development from Ant, who made significant progress as a playmaker last season on his way to securing his first All-NBA selection. He likely represents the team’s most direct route to achieving a top-10 offense, which would be essential for claiming a spot “at the big table.”
The Wolves might indeed make progress — if Edwards continues to develop, if Finch can make Gobert and Randle integrate more swiftly than Rudy and KAT did, if Conley and DiVincenzo can keep the team running smoothly, if McDaniels makes considerable progress, and if the team can reduce turnovers (having recorded two consecutive bottom-10 finishes in turnover rate), while also increasing their offensive pace (ranked 28th in transition frequency). However, this seems like a significant number of “ifs,” don’t you think?
So, here’s another: If enough of these factors do not favor the Wolves, they could find themselves back on the outside looking in, questioning whether they have already squandered their best opportunity, particularly after parting ways with a <a data-i13n="cpos:22;pos:1"
