EDMONTON — In a far corner of the Carolina Hurricanes dressing room, there exists a double-wide locker stall, as spacious as a goalie’s, yet designated for a skater. It’s an amusing quirk of the room’s layout. This stall is located as far as possible from the locker room door, distanced from the reporters who routinely enter. It offers a quiet, almost secluded environment—much like the experience of playing in Raleigh.
Teuvo Teräväinen cherished that space.
He appreciated the stall and enjoyed that mostly Chicago-based reporters sought him out for interviews. He embraced the tranquility and the anonymity that Raleigh provided. Playing smart, effective hockey for a competent team was something he valued greatly.
“It was a perfect fit for him,” remarked Winnipeg Jets forward Nino Niederreiter, who spent four seasons alongside Teräväinen in Carolina. “He wasn’t receiving the recognition he deserved for being such a talented player, but that was something he really preferred.”
Teräväinen doesn’t shy away from the truth. To be honest, he didn’t truly wish to leave.
“I really liked it there,” Teräväinen stated. “We had a fantastic team, and I was good friends with my teammates. There were many Finns on the roster each year, which was great. It’s unfortunate that things didn’t pan out in the end. I would have loved to stay. However, I also felt it was time for me to explore new opportunities.”
Thus, it came as somewhat of a surprise when Teräväinen agreed to a three-year contract with the Chicago Blackhawks—the team that originally drafted him and where he won the Stanley Cup at the age of 20. This is the same player who famously joked, when asked about his thoughts after scoring a pivotal goal in the 2015 Stanley Cup Final, “Oh, no, now I have to do media.”
Chicago means attention; the spotlight on Connor Bedard also illuminates everyone in that locker room. Chicago carries historical significance; fans instantly embraced Teräväinen as a rookie and have long lamented his departure. Additionally, Chicago presents a lengthy path to relevance for a player who has just crossed the wrong side of 30.
In many ways, Chicago is the complete opposite of Carolina. Yet, that contrast holds its own appeal. Sometimes, stepping out of one’s comfort zone is the best way to rejuvenate oneself. Despite his shyness off the ice, Teräväinen has consistently excelled under pressure. As a rookie in 2015, he netted four goals and added six assists in 18 playoff games and has been a reliable postseason contributor for the Hurricanes, tallying 19 goals and 20 assists over the last six playoffs.
“I thrive in big games; I enjoy playoff hockey,” he explained. “Chicago hasn’t been a playoff contender for a while, but I’m excited about the chance to help them return to that stage. There are many talented young players here, for sure. Assisting those young guys in improving their game is thrilling.”
This endeavor begins with Bedard. General manager Kyle Davidson signed Teräväinen to serve as an option on Bedard’s right wing, bringing the playmaking skills and smart, reliable two-way play necessary to maximize the Blackhawks’ teenage star’s potential. The early results have been impressive. Bedard assisted Teräväinen on a goal during the opener in Salt Lake City. In Edmonton against the defending Western Conference champions, Teräväinen contributed two goals and two assists while Bedard added one goal and two assists. Together, they were on the ice for one even-strength goal and three power-play goals in a 5-2 win.
“He’s a very intelligent player,” Bedard noted. “He’s always positioned perfectly. He maintains composure with the puck. It’s a lot of fun to work alongside him, for sure.”
Teräväinen chuckles modestly at the notion, but in many respects, he is the closest the Blackhawks have had to Bedard in terms of hype and fan excitement in recent memory.

“I don’t know, I had a bit of the spotlight back then, but for Connor, it’s different,” Teräväinen remarked. “It’s so natural for him to be in the spotlight, too. He seems to enjoy it. He manages it really well. I’m not sure I can offer him much help there.”
Then he laughed again.
“Actually, he can probably guide me on how to deal with that stuff,” he stated.
Upon entering the league, Teräväinen mentioned that almost the entire team took him under their wings. As a rare rookie on a veteran squad, he recalled how Jonathan Toews, Marian Hossa, Patrick Kane, Duncan Keith, Brent Seabrook, and Patrick Sharp all welcomed him and facilitated his adjustment.
However, all those players had big personalities. No one will be confusing Teräväinen with Seabrook anytime soon. Teräväinen aims to assist Bedard and the upcoming generation of Blackhawks prospects as they transition into the league over the next few years. Nevertheless, he describes himself more as a lead-by-example type rather than a social coordinator.
“If you get to know him, he’s a lot of fun to have around,” Niederreiter said. “But that’s not always easy. He’s quite reserved. Very Finnish. Still, he’s a fantastic guy, and I really like him. He’ll be a great addition for Chicago.”
Blackhawks coach Luke Richardson highlighted Teräväinen’s “calmness” as a significant asset, emphasizing the experience that new players are bringing to the lineup.
“He’s more of a doer than a talker,” Richardson noted. “We will rely on his actions. You can’t have everyone being a rah-rah type. It’s essential to have some players who actually go out there and perform.”
In the first three games, Teräväinen has emerged as the Blackhawks’ leading scorer and best all-around player. He is just one point shy of the league lead, and as of Saturday, both he and Seth Jones were the only players with three power-play points. However, don’t expect Teräväinen to boast about his achievements or engage in self-congratulation. After Nick Foligno presented him with the flashy chain awarded to the player of the game following a victory, he quietly returned to his locker. Yet, his teammates insisted on a speech. What did he say? “Winning is fun, we have a good team, let’s go, boys.” Alright, perhaps he’s more of a Hemingway than a Churchill.

“He’s very quiet, but he strikes me as a super nice guy, really down to earth.
“He came in and won a Cup right away, which is quite impressive for him,” Bedard remarked. “He has a lot of respect for the teammates he played alongside during that time. It’s exciting that he can come back years later. It’s quite a remarkable story.”

“Chicago is definitely a fantastic sports city,” Teräväinen noted. “We really need our sports teams to regain their strength. When the teams are thriving, the atmosphere in the city shifts dramatically. It’s incredible. That’s what I aspire to experience once more.”
