“I was surprised to discover that as a coach, you’re not actually with the team that much,” Nash shared with Eurohoops. “You have just five minutes with players before the game, during halftime, and after the game. Those are the only moments when you engage with the team.

Nash spoke in Slovenia at a retirement event for Goran Dragic, who played alongside Nash in Phoenix and later under him in Brooklyn in 2022.
Dragic, having been influenced by the esteemed Heat culture in Miami, previously remarked on how challenging his time with the Nets was, as the franchise often seemed more focused on satisfying stars rather than pursuing victory.
Right after Nash’s hiring, Irving expressed that he didn’t view the Nets as having a head coach and frequently disregarded Nash’s play calls.
A Hall of Fame point guard, Nash was used to guiding winning teams as a leader on the court, but he found that leading strong personalities from the sidelines was a completely different challenge.

“The key is to be honest with the players, and there are various ways to achieve that,” Nash remarked. “Clear and honest communication is crucial so players aren’t left feeling uncertain. Communication is fundamental.
“The leadership role came naturally to me, as leading by example was straightforward. However, from a coaching standpoint, it’s a different kind of leadership. Coaching requires you to lead in smaller, more nuanced moments.”
Nash joined the Brooklyn Nets in September 2020 at the invitation of general manager Sean Marks, a long-time friend from their playing days.
Marks had previously attempted to bring Nash into the Nets organization, continually presenting better positions, until ultimately the head coaching opportunity proved too attractive for Nash to decline.

“I hadn’t intended to pursue coaching; rather, there was a unique situation in Brooklyn that presented itself,” Nash explained. “It was a swift transition, requiring adaptation to a different dynamic. A significant part of my job involved managing relationships among front offices, players, and agents due to the numerous personalities involved. The influence and power that players wield today are considerable.”
Following Durant’s attempt to have Nash dismissed in the summer of 2022, Nets owner Joe Tsai chose to maintain Nash’s position.
However, the team released him just seven games into the subsequent season and has since dismissed his successor, Jacque Vaughn, along with interim coach Kevin Ollie.
