Prior to Saturday’s game against the New York Yankees at Comerica Park, the Detroit Tigers brought back Torkelson, the first overall pick in the 2020 draft, from Triple-A Toledo, as confirmed by various unnamed sources who are not authorized to discuss roster changes.
In 58 games with the Mud Hens, Torkelson, who plays first base, achieved a batting average of .239 with 11 home runs and an OPS of .799.
Set to turn 25 in late August, Torkelson last played for the Tigers on June 1. The following day, he was sent back to Triple-A for the second time in three seasons.
After the game on Friday, the Tigers optioned Bligh Madris—the team’s primary first baseman against right-handed pitchers—back to Toledo, paving the way for Torkelson’s return.

Despite certain progress, Torkelson’s defensive capabilities at first base remain subpar, and he recorded a concerning strikeout rate of 30.9% during his 58 games with the Mud Hens, striking out 85 times in 275 plate appearances.
