Following the announcement on Sunday afternoon that the Sixers have agreed to a one-year contract with French forward Guerschon Yabusele after his impressive showing in the 2024 Olympics, the team’s roster has reached 14 players on standard contracts. Although NBA regulations permit teams to sign 15 players, Daryl Morey, President of Basketball Operations for the Sixers, has stated several times throughout the offseason that the team intends to begin the season with an available roster spot for greater flexibility.
In simpler terms: unless a surprising trade occurs, we have a clear idea of what the Sixers’ roster will look like as the 2024-25 season commences:
Barring surprises, we now know the Sixers’ initial ’24-25 team:
– Tyrese Maxey
– Kelly Oubre Jr.
– Paul George
– Caleb Martin
– Joel Embiid
– Kyle Lowry
– Eric Gordon
– Andre Drummond
– Reggie Jackson
– Jared McCain
- Ricky Council IV
– KJ Martin
– Guerschon Yabusele

Every Monday, I share a 5 Sixers Thoughts article filled with various reflections on the organization’s current status. To commemorate the temporary completion of the roster, let’s focus on that total of 14! Below is one thought, storyline, or question I’m exploring regarding each player expected to start the season with the Sixers:
Tyrese Maxey
In recent years, Maxey has significantly improved as a playmaker for his teammates, although creating opportunities for others still remains a challenge for him.
Tyrese Maxey reflects after signing five-year contract with Sixers: ‘I found a home here’
Everyone knows Maxey’s ability to score, but with Paul George joining the team to share the burden of perimeter scoring, could this fifth year be the moment Maxey makes a substantial leap in his passing skills?
If Maxey can effectively utilize his scoring talent to create more opportunities for his teammates, he could elevate himself into true superstar status.
Kelly Oubre Jr.
Previously viewed as a player unlikely to contribute meaningfully to a competitive team, Oubre proved critics wrong during his time in Philadelphia last season by taking on multiple roles. His mid-season contributions largely came as a high-volume scorer, especially during Joel Embiid’s extended absence due to a meniscus injury.
Oubre returns this season and is expected to take on the starting shooting guard role, earning significantly more than he did during his first year with the Sixers, though perhaps not quite as much as he believes he deserves. With Embiid likely to play more than the 39 games he appeared in last season and the addition of a versatile star scorer in George requiring considerable touches, Oubre is expected to have the ball less frequently this time around.
How Oubre adapts his offensive skills to play effectively off the ball could determine whether he retains Nick Nurse’s starting shooting guard position throughout the season. Earlier in the 2023-24 campaign, Oubre and Embiid demonstrated strong chemistry, especially in situations where Embiid was double-teamed in the post as Oubre cuts to the basket.
Paul George
George remains a reliable offensive player even at 34 years of age, unhesitatingly shooting from anywhere on the court.
In various situations, George demonstrates his ability to impact the game from the floor and frequently connects with his teammates. He is also a highly efficient driver, often getting to the free-throw line with ease.
When it comes to defense, what role will George play during the regular season? One could argue that, given he plays alongside the dynamic offensive talents of Embiid and Maxey, he might be able to reduce his offensive load and instead focus on challenging defensive assignments. Alternatively, his advanced age may compel the Sixers to manage his energy levels for a playoff run, which means assigning him less demanding duties on the defensive end during most matches and increasing his responsibilities as a defender as the regular season wraps up.
Caleb Martin
After Martin miscalculated his initial market, the Sixers quickly signed him to a four-year contract, marking a significant achievement for Morey’s front office. They added a starting-caliber wing with capabilities on both ends of the court at a cost-effective price. While Martin has the necessary skills to adapt and align with the type of wing players that Sixers head coach Nick Nurse prefers, there exists an intriguing contrast between Martin’s defensive approach and his new coach’s philosophy.
Sixers film study: Can Caleb Martin adapt his game for Philadelphia?
As is often the case with role players, Martin’s success with the Sixers will likely hinge on his three-point shooting accuracy. There exists a scenario in which an increased number of open three-point shots – greater than he’s previously encountered – could lead him to achieve career-high shooting percentages. Conversely, there is also the possibility that his efficiency remains similar to past seasons, potentially placing limits on his offensive potential.
Joel Embiid
The release of the Sixers’ 2024-25 regular season schedule last week revealed 15 back-to-backs. Discussions surrounding how the team manages Embiid’s workload during the regular season, with the aim of ensuring he reaches the playoffs in optimal health, will be a recurring topic for as long as he remains with the organization.
However, the disappointments of last season will amplify these conversations. Naturally, the primary objective in signing George was to enhance the team surrounding Embiid. Still, with the acquisition of the nine-time All-Star wing, it’s noteworthy that on evenings when Embiid cannot play, the Sixers will have two All-Star-caliber players available to help shoulder the responsibility of leading the team.
Kyle Lowry
Last season, Lowry’s addition was a blessing for the Sixers, especially with De’Anthony Melton’s prolonged absence, which began shortly after Lowry joined the squad. However, by the time the team was eliminated from the first round by the New York Knicks, it had become evident that the 38-year-old veteran was somewhat overburdened as a starter.
Now, Lowry is expected to serve as the backup point guard. If he performs at the same level he did in 2023-24, he will stand out as one of the best backup point guards in the league. However, as his athleticism continues to decline rapidly, it raises concerns about how much more his physical capabilities can diminish before he ceases to be a valuable rotation player.
Nonetheless, it’s challenging to count against someone with Lowry’s intelligence and experience.
Eric Gordon
In terms of veterans, the first signing to emerge this offseason for the Sixers was their agreement with Gordon on a veteran’s minimum deal, which includes a player option for a second year. Recognized as one of the league’s most accomplished and confident long-range shooters, Gordon is poised to play a vital role in Nurse’s rotation, particularly within second-unit lineups.
Typically, when the Sixers add role players and strategize their effective utilization, they aim to maximize those players’ time on the court alongside Embiid. However, while mapping out Nurse’s rotation in detail last month, it became clear that Gordon represents a unique instance: Embiid would gain just as much from playing with Gordon as Gordon would from being on the floor with Embiid.
Gordon excels at shooting from well beyond the arc against any defensive scheme, offering the kind of spacing to an Embiid-centric lineup that Buddy Hield could not provide during last year’s postseason.
Andre Drummond
Drummond may not be the ideal player—his flaws on the court often provide comedic moments during the lengthy 82-game regular season. However, after almost acquiring him at last year’s trade deadline, only for the Chicago Bulls to back out at the last moment, the Sixers have re-signed a player who has likely delivered the best backup center minutes behind Embiid than any other player in the franchise’s history.
The Sixers’ approach to their backup center position this offseason is difficult to criticize. They upgraded from Paul Reed to Drummond, who, while significantly older, also offers much greater stability as a basketball player. Beyond the enhancement on the court, signing Drummond justified the decision to waive Reed—allowing for the shedding of his non-guaranteed salary and paving the way for the Martin deal.
Reggie Jackson
Reggie Jackson, who played 82 games for the defending champion Denver Nuggets last season, may face a diminished role after signing with the Sixers last month. While he still has the scoring ability to make an impact in crucial moments, his inconsistent shot selection poses a challenge, particularly alongside Maxey and Embiid (putting two close friends together is generally a safe bet, and Jackson and George are as tight as they come).
Sixers film study: What does Reggie Jackson bring to the table?
A recurring theme during the 2023-24 season was Nurse’s aim to maximize the number of capable ball-handlers on the court. This strategy enhances offensive options and facilitates better passing. Will this focus allow Jackson to carve out a spot in Nurse’s regular rotation? It’s certainly a possibility worth considering.
Jared McCain
Selected by the Sixers as the No. 16 overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, McCain does not seem ready to assume a regular role on a contending NBA roster at the outset of his rookie season. The silver lining is that, especially after the acquisition of Gordon, he won’t be required to do so.
Nonetheless, McCain’s potential contributions to the Sixers in 2024-25 may be underestimated at the moment. Despite not shooting well in the NBA Summer League, his skill as a long-range shooter is clear. His prowess as a three-point shooter makes him a strong candidate to get hot for brief periods or even longer stretches. While it may be a stretch to expect him to receive substantial minutes next season, it’s entirely possible he could make an impact as a rookie.
Ricky Council IV
Many observers believe the Sixers’ most significant weakness lies at the power forward position; Caleb Martin is anticipated to start there, but he lacks the traditional physical attributes of a four, and there is no clear backup. Council and KJ Martin are set to compete for backup power forward minutes in training camp—while some might consider Council, the younger and potentially more exciting option, as the frontrunner, I believe KJ Martin may have a better chance of securing that role initially. However, the addition of the 6-foot-8 Yabusele complicates matters, providing Nurse with a stronger third option.
There’s no question that the Sixers have found a valuable player in Council, who they signed to a two-way contract as an undrafted free agent in 2023. They quickly recognized his potential as a fringe rotation player. Council is dedicated to enhancing his three-point shooting; although his mechanics may not be aesthetically pleasing, he is making shots with greater frequency.
KJ Martin
KJ Martin returns to the team under a “balloon deal” contract, making him a likely trade asset by January or February. In the meantime, his exceptional athleticism, solid defensive skills, and improved short-roll passing and decision-making solidify his case as the ninth (and probably final) member of Nurse’s initial rotation.
Guerschon Yabusele
Since moving overseas after two seasons with the Boston Celtics, Yabusele has made considerable strides in mobility, yet he remains a player whose game relies more on power and muscle than on finesse and athleticism—potentially making him distinct from the two dynamic players, Council and KJ Martin. His enhanced three-point shooting ability is another significant asset in Yabusele’s repertoire.
ascension back into the NBA.
Adem Bona
The Sixers chose Bona at No. 41, the day after drafting McCain, and it is easy to understand why he caught the team’s interest. His exceptional energy, impressive athletic abilities, and solid shot-blocking skills were evident throughout the Summer League.
Nevertheless, the reasons Bona wasn’t a first-round selection are evident: he lacks offensive versatility except for setting screens and the occasional alley-oop dunk, and his foul rates are alarmingly high—averaging 5.2 fouls per game in five Summer League appearances while playing just 21.0 minutes per game.
As the season approaches, it would not be surprising if KJ Martin—or possibly Yabusele—emerges as Nurse’s third-string center, leaving Bona in need of developmental time with the G League Blue Coats in Delaware.
