FOX6’s Lily Zhao asked, “How do you approach the opening weekend of the playoffs? Is it essential to treat this as a must-win race, and how do you cope with the pressure? Or do you view it as just another race and focus on doing your best to secure a victory?”
“In the moment, it’s just another race,” Mayer responded. “We have prepared thoroughly, so there’s no need to panic. Our job has been done up to this point. Now it’s just about executing and performing as well as we can on the track. Ultimately, trying too hard can lead to mistakes, so it’s best to stay steady and let our skills take over.”
This year, Mayer enters the postseason as the No. 7 seed.
Last year, he made it to the championship race, largely thanks to a vital victory at the Charlotte Roval that saved him from elimination.

“During the round of 12,” Mayer recounted, “we faced two difficult races prior, putting us in a must-win scenario. That week, we went out and dominated the race. We secured the pole position at the start, led the majority of laps, and ultimately won. It was an incredible experience that greatly boosted my confidence because we really excelled out there. It was satisfying to achieve our goals, and it paid off as we advanced to the Championship 4.”

“It’s a unique situation because you’re somewhat defending your past achievement,” Mayer explained. “Reaching the Championship 4 sets an incredibly high standard, but I’m eager to see what we can accomplish this time around. I feel like I’ve improved as a race car driver, and my team has grown stronger since last year, positioning us as a serious contender for the championship.”
The playoffs kick off this Saturday at Kansas Speedway.
