Buffalo, NY (WGR 550) – On Friday at the Prospects Challenge, Jiri Kulich and the majority of the Buffalo Sabres showcased their skills, defeating the Columbus Blue Jackets with a score of 3-1.
While the score does not fully reflect the Sabres’ dominance, it is worth noting that I chose Blue Jackets goalie Nolan Lalonde as the game’s first star. Had Lalonde not made some incredible saves, the final score could have easily reached double digits.
During the game, the Sabres outshot the Blue Jackets 16-4 in the first period and 19-9 in the second, with Lalonde ending the night having made 38 saves.
Kulich and Isak Rosen were expected to stand out, with Kulich living up to those expectations while Rosen did not quite measure up.
Kulich’s goal in the third period is likely to be highlighted on SportsCenter and may even make waves in Canada. He showcased his skill by completely outmaneuvering defenseman Charlie Elick, a second-round pick from this year’s NHL Draft, before deftly deking Lalonde, scoring his second goal and tallying his third point of the night.

Kulich began the scoring when Vsevolod Komarov’s shot hit Rosen in the leg, bouncing right to Kulich, who seized the opportunity without hesitation. Komarov continued to assert himself following his recognition as the best defenseman in the QMJHL, demonstrating strength at both ends of the ice and fearlessness in pinching in to maintain puck possession while playing a physical style of hockey.

Olivier Nadeau showcased his dominance on the forecheck, resulting in a power-play goal. His speed was a key factor as Kulich entered the zone. Victor Neuchev sprinted up the right wing and set Nadeau up perfectly with a pass that left him open. Nadeau consistently won battles along the boards, ensuring the puck stayed in the offensive zone while he was on the ice.
Noah Ostlund was my selection for the game’s third star. Although he didn’t register a point, he had the puck on his stick throughout the game. Despite his smaller stature, I was impressed by his ability to win numerous battles along the walls. His efforts led to multiple turnovers, creating excellent scoring opportunities for Konsta Helenius and Anton Wahlberg. Helenius, after receiving a beautiful pass from Komarov, found himself with an open net but missed the opportunity by sending the puck through the crease. Ostlund also had several clear one-timer chances from the right circle, but Lalonde held firm.
The defensemen, Noah Laaouan and Jack Bodin, who were relatively unknown before this game, performed admirably as well.
Scott Ratzlaff faced only 20 shots during the game, but Buffalo’s defense did falter on four occasions, allowing him to make four crucial saves from point-blank range.
While many standout performances could be highlighted, it is essential to note the Sabres’ adherence to their game plan. Rochester Americans’ coach Mike Leone remarked,
“We focused on playing hard, smart, and fast for the past three days, and the commitment to establishing a tough game identity, regardless of the outcome, was evident. From the outset, we played rapidly, maintained puck possession, and managed the last two minutes effectively, preventing them from pulling their goalie. It was a solid effort from the entire group.”
Leone will not hold a morning skate.
On Saturday, the Sabres will face off against the New Jersey Devils. The Devils secured a 9-1 victory over the Ottawa Senators on Friday. I predict that Ryerson Leenders, a seventh-round selection by the Sabres this past June, will be given the start in goal.
Last season, Leenders recorded a 24-17-4 record with the OHL Mississauga Steelheads, posting a 3.12 goals-against average and a .909 save percentage.
The game at Harborcenter on Saturday is already sold out.
