MARICOPA COUNTY, AZ (AZFamily) — The NASCAR season will reach its climax in the Valley with Championship Weekend at Phoenix Raceway this November.
Last year, Ryan Blaney secured his first Cup Series title. Recently, he returned to the Avondale track and reflected on his championship journey and his desire to replicate that success.
“It’s strange… for something you aspire to achieve your entire life, especially since I grew up idolizing these champions,” Blaney shared. “I always wanted to achieve that. I worked my whole life for it, and then when it finally happens, you find yourself unsure of your feelings.”
Few athletes ever experience reaching the peak of their sport.
“You’re clearly ecstatic and overjoyed, but I can’t even articulate whether it felt like I expected. You can’t predict it. I didn’t have a particular expectation of how I would feel,” Blaney commented. “It didn’t let me down, nor did it surpass my expectations.”
Blaney likened the experience of tasting victory to sampling “forbidden fruit,” intensifying his desire for more.
“Our drive for a championship is definitely stronger this year, especially after having experienced it. You yearn to experience that feeling again,” he added.
He has an opportunity to relive that moment as NASCAR’s Championship Weekend returns to Phoenix Raceway for the fifth consecutive year in November.
“I’ve always loved this track,” Blaney stated. “It’s a unique racetrack with two distinctly different ends.”
Blaney has achieved eight top-five finishes in 17 career races at Phoenix Raceway, including the last six consecutively.
“I believe it has improved over the years in terms of racing dynamics and the choice of racing lines,” he remarked.
The fans continue to show their support, with November’s championship race already sold out for the seventh year in a row.
“Seeing such a large crowd, observing the campers, and witnessing their excitement truly motivates us. It makes us feel appreciated and reassures us that we’re providing them a great experience,” Blaney explained.
