NEW YORK — The Royals are finally headed home.
They’re carrying momentum into the American League Division Series, having secured a 4-2 Game 2 victory against the Yankees on Monday night at Yankee Stadium.
It has been over two weeks since the Royals were last in Kansas City. During that time, they got their regular season back on track with a sweep in Washington D.C., celebrated twice with champagne to clinch a playoff spot in Atlanta, and triumphed in the AL Wild Card Series in Baltimore. After spending five days in New York, they achieved their goal: a split with the AL East champion Yankees in the Bronx.
Now, the Royals are set to bring postseason baseball back to Kauffman Stadium, a goal they had envisioned since the beginning of 2024. They were inspired by the excitement surrounding the 2014-2015 runs and have witnessed the city embrace its NFL dynasty, the Chiefs, right across the parking lot at the Truman Sports Complex – which, by the way, remain undefeated following their Monday night victory over the Saints at Arrowhead Stadium.
A “Let’s go Royals” chant erupted there, and the Royals players celebrated by watching the end of the Chiefs’ game in the clubhouse after their win.
It’s an exciting time to be a fan in Kansas City, and the Royals are eager to join the revelry as the ALDS progresses to the Midwest for Games 3 and 4 on Wednesday and Thursday. Should a Game 5 be necessary, it will take place back in New York on Saturday.
“It’s going to be electric,” said shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. “… Going back home is going to be loads of fun. We’re gearing up and getting hot at the right time. It’s going to be an incredible experience.”
In the current 2-2-1 format of the Division Series, the team returning home for Games 3-4 has won the series 29 out of 44 times (66%) when tied after two games.
“I’m excited to head back to The K and see the fans,” Royals starter Cole Ragans expressed. “Having playoff baseball back in Kansas City is going to be amazing. Securing a split here is crucial. It feels like a fresh series when we get to The K.”
The Royals anticipate strong support from their fanbase on Wednesday for Game 3 and are looking forward to the Roo on their side instead of the opposing fans. Yankee Stadium hit a peak noise level in the top of the first inning on Monday when Carlos Rodón struck out the side in just 12 pitches, showcasing his dominance.
The Royals’ dugout observed the energized crowd — and Rodón’s animated response to his strikeouts — with manager Matt Quatraro noting that it was a lot of energy for a single inning, while Witt commented that “everyone saw it.”
Three innings later, Rodón exited the game after just 3 2/3 innings. Catcher Salvador Perez led off the inning with a game-tying home run, followed by the Royals putting together four consecutive hits to take and extend their lead.
“The first at-bat doesn’t determine the entire game,” stated third baseman Maikel Garcia, who recorded four hits on Monday night.
Witt added: “That’s the beauty of baseball; it’s played over nine innings, not just one or two. You need to play the whole game. What makes this team special is our resilience and our ability to take it one inning at a time.”
Kansas City powered through that crucial inning to support Ragans, who delivered his second strong start of the postseason. Although he walked four batters in four innings, he allowed only one run while striking out five hitters.
“I struggled a bit with my control,” Ragans admitted. “But I felt like I made necessary pitches when it mattered.”
After Ragans maintained composure in the bottom of the fourth with a clean inning, Quatraro turned to his bullpen for the fifth. Despite the bullpen’s struggles in Game 1, Quatraro had confidence in his relievers to secure 15 outs.
Angel Zerpa, John Schreiber, Kris Bubic, and Lucas Erceg combined for five effective innings, with only Erceg surrendering a run courtesy of Jazz Chisholm’s leadoff home run in the ninth.
“You never expect to keep a team like that scoreless out of the bullpen,” Quatraro remarked. “But to hold them in check was much more indicative of what our pitchers can do compared to the previous game.”
The Royals are set to fly home during Tuesday’s off-day, eager to welcome fans back to The K on Wednesday. After an extended time spent on the road and in visitor stadiums, they’re ready for the support of their home crowd.
“Atlanta, they were in a playoff scenario,” Bubic noted. “Baltimore, that atmosphere was loud. And this place will be, too.”
“But I’ve heard Kansas City can be quite loud as well.”
