Rose Zhang Prioritizes education, Forgoes Founders cup Defense
Rising golf star Rose Zhang has made the challenging decision to forego defending her title at the Founders Cup, opting instead to focus on her studies at Stanford University. The 14th-ranked golfer cited the demanding balance of her academic and professional commitments as the reason for her absence.
“I think one mistake that I made last year was when I had an offseason and I was at school full time with 20 units. I had a couple hard classes and I lost a lot of sleep,” Zhang explained during a press conference. “I didn’t really take care of myself. I was trying to practice the same amount I was on tour and also being in school in that sense, which was a lot to load.”
Zhang, who won the Mizuho Americas open in her professional debut, turned pro in May 2023 while simultaneously pursuing her communications degree at Stanford. She recognizes the unique challenges of her chosen path.
“You no, a lot of people would ask me, but I do think it is indeed really, really good for my character. Really good for just my personal advancement in general… It’s very difficult and I’m not really sure if there is a right option to just turn pro and just play golf or finish my degree,” she said. “In my opinion, I think this is a good balance for what I’m striving for.”
Though Zhang will miss the Founders Cup, she plans to return to the LPGA Tour when the academic semester concludes, ready to compete at the highest level.
