NHL: New York Rangers at Columbus Blue JacketsCredit: Russell LaBounty-USA TODAY Sports

When the ‌New York Rangers made their way to Columbus to face off against the‌ Blue Jackets on February ‍25 of the previous season, rookie Matt Rempe ⁣had just completed his initial week in the NHL. ⁢Despite being new to the League, the tall newcomer⁣ had ‌already begun to establish his⁤ presence during those first seven days and four matches. Meanwhile, Mathieu Olivier of the⁢ Blue Jackets was prepared to meet him at Nationwide Arena.

It is widely known that Rempe and Olivier squared⁣ off in a fight during the first period of that ‌game. In truth,‍ Rempe endured quite a beating in the bout, leading to significant concerns regarding his future as he was taking substantial hits ⁣so early in his NHL⁤ career.

Following that fight, Rempe ‌did modify his approach to fighting, appearing ‌in only three‌ bouts within his initial five games. He dropped the gloves again two games later against Ryan Reaves of the ⁤Toronto Maple Leafs and fought once more last season during the chaotic line brawl against the New Jersey Devils on April 3.

However, that fight in Columbus garnered Rempe the respect of Olivier. As Columbus forward Adam Fantilli shared with John Scott on the Drop the Gloves podcast this week, the two players had agreed to fight following a discussion during the pregame warmups. Olivier wanted to ensure that Rempe was ready for the matchup, especially since the⁢ rookie had just participated in an intense altercation the day prior against ⁢Nic Deslauriers of the Philadelphia Flyers.

“I believe Rempe faced off in⁤ a fight previously (on Feb 24 in Philadelphia), and‌ after that, we played them the following night. ‘Olly’ mentioned to me, ‘Listen man, if you need a night to‌ recover…’ but I’m pretty sure the story is that [Rempe] replied, ‘No, we’ll go ‌tonight,’” Fantilli recounted.

Just 2:12 ⁣into the first period, the fourth-liners met and initiated the fight. It was brief but intense. Despite being at ⁢least six inches shorter than⁢ Rempe, the 6-foot-1, 222-pound‍ forward for the Blue Jackets managed⁣ to‍ deliver over a dozen solid ‌right hooks⁣ to the rookie’s head,⁤ most of them landing‌ cleanly. The ‍quick bout concluded when Olivier threw Rempe to the ice.

“When ‘Olly’ is angered, ⁣he is one of the most intimidating individuals I’ve ever witnessed,”⁤ Fantilli described. “He certainly⁣ bested Rempe in that fight, but he holds a lot ⁤of respect for Rempe for stepping up and fighting two nights in a ⁤row.”

Rempe’s NHL debut included a fight against the Islanders’ Matt Martin outdoors at MetLife Stadium, along with accumulating 15 penalty⁢ minutes, which ⁣included a game misconduct‍ in his first three games. Then during a matinee game⁤ against the Flyers on Feb. 24, Rempe scored his first ⁣NHL goal, a crucial third-period game-winner in a 2-1 match. He also engaged‌ in a fierce battle with Deslauriers.

The⁤ two heavyweights went toe-to-toe in an exhausting exchange that left both fighters worn out in the penalty⁢ box.

It was during that fight, three minutes into the first period, that prompted Olivier to seek ‍out Rempe ‌during ‍warmups the following day, ensuring‌ the ⁢young player was both physically and mentally prepared to engage in another bout so soon ‍after the clash with Deslauriers.

“I just told him, ‘Great tilt yesterday. ⁣Hope you’re doing alright’ ⁤because that was a tough one. He replied, ‘Yeah, I’m good.’ On⁤ his first shift, he asked me about it, which shows a lot of respect. Kudos to him,” Olivier⁣ said following⁣ that game. “For lack of a better word, that takes some balls.”

Despite coach Peter Laviolette encouraging Rempe to fight less while still being a physical presence in other aspects, the young player has much to prove to secure a regular place in the‌ Rangers’ lineup this season. Last spring, he participated ⁣in 11 of the 16 games ⁤during ‍the Stanley Cup Playoffs, ‌scored New York’s first postseason goal, and effectively contributed on⁤ both ends of the ice, despite limited ⁤playing time. Notably, he refrained from fighting⁤ in the playoffs‌ after accumulating five⁤ fights in 17 ⁣regular-season ⁤games.

This summer, Rempe took fighting lessons from former NHL enforcer Georges Laraque, which was ⁣just one part of his overall strategy to enhance every aspect of his game before ‌training camp. ‌The 23-year-old returned⁣ to the tri-state area in July and has been ⁤ training with Chris Kreider since then.

“I feel ‌like with‌ every person you’re taking bits and pieces, learning here and there, and absorbing as much‌ information as possible,” Rempe⁢ mentioned at the Shoulder Check charity event in Connecticut earlier this summer. “All these people are being so great, trying to assist me. I’m honored to learn as much as I can.”

Honored to learn. And honored to earn the respect of opponents like Olivier.
