In this article, I will spotlight a few young players who have caught my attention during NHL camps and the preseason. This is not intended to be a comprehensive list of players who have performed well in camp. My observations were limited, as I did not closely monitor all 32 teams’ camps. Consequently, the absence of a player from this piece should not be interpreted as a critique of their skills.
Edström has emerged as a standout for the Rangers this fall. His impressive size enhances his net-front presence, an essential quality that allows him to create scoring opportunities in high-percentage areas. Additionally, he possesses some skill and demonstrates the ability to generate chances with his puck handling. While his skating stride may seem heavy, I have seen taller players who move less efficiently. Edström reminds me somewhat of Elmer Söderblom, who impressed during his initial camp with Detroit; however, Edström’s challenge, like Söderblom’s, will be to maintain his skating performance consistently throughout the NHL season.
Initially, I had reservations about Cristall’s skating translating to the professional level, but early indications from Washington’s camp have been encouraging. He has been a standout performer, generating offense against NHL defensemen with his remarkable skill and vision. Although his skating might appear unorthodox, he has shown the ability to evade pressure and operate effectively at a higher pace.
Hildeby, though not included in the pipeline rankings I recently completed due to recently turning 23, is undeniably a legitimate top goalie prospect. He performed impressively against the Montreal Canadiens, who fielded many of their top forwards. For a larger goalie, he exhibits good mobility, anticipates plays well, and maintains efficient movement in the crease. He is poised to enter the NHL.
St. Martin has piqued the interest of scouts as a sixth-round re-entry pick in 2024. He is a sizable winger with solid skating ability. Although he has shown the athletic prowess typical of NHL players, there were significant uncertainties regarding his offensive skills during his junior career. The answer to those questions is still pending over the course of a full season. However, in Florida’s camp, he exhibited a surprising level of offensive capability and skill.
Räty has experienced a rollercoaster ride as a prospect over the past five years, but his strong performance in the Canucks’ camp indicates that he remains a candidate for NHL consideration. He possesses a blend of skill and intelligence; although his skating may not be elite, he has made noticeable progress in recent years, evolving into a legitimate two-way center who is expected to contribute secondary offense in the NHL. His performance in camp aligns with this trajectory.
Casey executed all that was required of him in camp. As a dynamic skater and puck-mover, he showcased his ability to make plays during transitions and from the blue line. He is a promising prospect; however, Casey faces a significant challenge due to the depth chart. Competing for opportunities alongside Dougie Hamilton, Luke Hughes, and Šimon Nemec, his path to becoming a full-time NHL player hinges on either his offensive production being exceptional or proving that he can manage defensively as a smaller defenseman. his transition to pro play has been promising thus far.

Cagnoni made a solid impression with the Sharks during rookie camp and preseason. He is an excellent skater and puck-mover who will likely accumulate points at higher levels. Standing at 5 feet 9 inches, however, he will always face questions about his size until proven otherwise. While he is highly skilled and his skating aids in defense, to thrive in the NHL at his stature and secure regular even-strength minutes, his puck-handling will need to be exceptional, reminiscent of …
Lane Hutson, LHD, Montreal Canadiens
… Hutson’s puck-handling abilities. He has been among the most impressive players for Montreal during the preseason. Displaying the same dynamic offensive skills he showcased in junior and college, few defensemen can navigate the line and read the game as he does. When he possesses the puck, even against seasoned players, he can dismantle defenses at an elite level using his skill, agility, and exceptional hockey intellect. However, as he confronts NHL competition, his defensive capabilities remain a concern. His skating isn’t as elite as smaller players like Quinn Hughes or Samuel Girard, and I’ve noticed him getting outpaced a bit too frequently. He will need to learn to navigate defensive situations in the NHL, similar to Adam Fox’s approach.
Kmec is a sizable defenseman whose mobility makes him a clear NHL athlete. Though he isn’t particularly offensive, he does possess the ability to make a solid first pass. I became intrigued by him when observing Prince George last season, debating his inclusion on my draft list. He demonstrates potential as a two-way professional player, and while he’s not a guaranteed success, he could surpass some later-round selections. He performed well in Vegas’ camp, securing an NHL contract after going undrafted for the third consecutive year.
Wiesblatt was released by San Jose after being a first-round pick and demonstrating limited progress over the years. He still seems to be a way from the NHL, but his performance since joining the Nashville organization has significantly improved. He is skilled, fast, and offers enough two-way value despite being a smaller winger. After his camp with the Predators, he is now much more on the radar than he has been for quite some time.
Though I haven’t witnessed much of Spellacy’s camp, scouts I’ve spoken with rave about his athleticism and professional traits. He is an outstanding skater who has performed sufficiently well against professionals to warrant a thorough evaluation with Chicago as an 18-year-old.
A part of me hesitated to include this one for fear of overhyping this prospect, but Yakemchuk’s preseason performance warrants mention. He has showcased his offensive skills and ability to make plays. His talent and mobility indicate significant professional potential. While his defensive play isn’t his strongest suit, it appears adequate given his age and experience level.
I’ve previously been skeptical of Bolduc’s game in recent years, and I may need to reconsider my stance if he maintains the level of performance noted in Blues camp. His skating, skill, and impressive shot/scoring capability have always impressed me
