KNOXVILLE, Iowa — Rico Abreu clinched the lead after an intense battle with Daryn Pittman and subsequently secured victory in the Avanti Windows & Doors Capitani Classic Presented by Great Southern Bank on Sunday at Knoxville Raceway.
This win marked the seventh for the St. Helena, California driver at what is known as the Sprint Car Capital of the World and came with a prize of $13,000 while driving for Rico Abreu Racing in car number 24.
Pittman kicked off strong after winning the $2,500 Pole Shuffle to start from pole position in the main event covering a distance of 25 laps. He initially led ahead of Brian Brown, Gio Scelzi, Abreu and Carson Macedo.
By lap two on turn two, Abreu executed a brilliant maneuver to overtake both Scelzi and Brown for second place. Scelzi then managed to pass Brown for third by lap five while Macedo ascended into fourth by lap seven.
Abreu steadily closed in on Pittman using the high side of the track. On lap eight he made his move coming out of turn four to take over first place. However, Pittman regained control by briefly overtaking him on lap nine before Abreu regained command off turn two again on lap ten.
From that point onward while navigating through lapped traffic smoothly allowed Abreau to extend his lead. Scelzi capitalized on lapped cars passing Pittman halfway through to secure second place. Meanwhile Macedo tried battling Pittman back and forth but eventually claimed third as well during late race phases.
The final gap saw Abreau finishing with a comfortable margin of over three seconds ahead of Scelzi ($9,000), followed by Macedo ($5,000), Pittman and Brad Sweet rounding up top five drivers.
