Rickie Weeks to Join Milwaukee Brewers’ Major League Staff

MILWAUKEE – The Milwaukee Brewers have made a significant staffing decision as they prioritize continuity within the organization. Former Milwaukee infielder Rickie Weeks is set to join the Major League staff, while Pat Murphy is expected to be promoted to manager, according to sources.
Weeks, who played 11 seasons with the Brewers and was a key member of the team that made the National League All-Star team in 2011, will fill the spot left by Murphy’s promotion. This move marks Weeks’ meteoric rise through the coaching ranks, starting with his hire as a player development assistant in February 2022.
The Brewers have yet to confirm either promotion, but Murphy, who has served as Milwaukee’s bench coach for the past eight seasons, is the only candidate mentioned by name since Craig Counsell’s departure for the Cubs last week.
Murphy, a former college coach at Notre Dame, joined the Brewers as bench coach in 2016 and has been an integral part of the coaching staff ever since. He brings a wealth of experience, including a stint as interim manager for the San Diego Padres in 2015, where he compiled a 42-54 record.
When asked about the qualities he was looking for in the next manager, Milwaukee GM Matt Arnold emphasized the importance of finding the best human for the role. He stated, “It’s hard to go wrong when you have an ’80’ human on the scouting scale. I think that would be our priority here.”
Weeks, who was the second overall pick in the 2003 Draft, played parts of 14 seasons in the Majors, including 11 seasons with the Brewers. His addition to the coaching staff will further strengthen the team’s expertise and provide valuable insights from a former player’s perspective.
Under Murphy’s leadership, the Brewers will inherit a coaching staff that remains mostly intact. Brewers owner Mark Attanasio confirmed that all other coaches have signed contracts to return in 2024. This includes pitching coach Chris Hook, bullpen coach Jim Henderson, hitting coaches Ozzie Timmons and Connor Dawson, and first-base coach Quintin Berry, among others.
Murphy’s journey to the Major League staff began with his four-year stint in the Minor Leagues before being hired by Notre Dame in 1988. He later became the head coach at Arizona State before joining the Padres organization in 2010. After his interim managerial role with the Padres, Murphy joined the Brewers staff in 2016 and has been an integral part of the team ever since.
Despite suffering a heart attack during the 2020 season, Murphy has fully recovered and has not experienced any health-related absences since.
