Kurt Roehrig experienced both triumphs and challenges throughout his career in racing. In 1995, he established Roehrig Motorsports to compete in the NASCAR Truck Series; driver Johnny Benson Jr started off strong by finishing 10th in their season debut. However, as sponsor Pennzoil withdrew their support shortly thereafter, Roehrig Motorsports faced imminent bankruptcy by December 1996.
This challenge prompted Kurt to adapt quickly: he switched to two Dodge trucks and secured Dana Corp. as a new sponsor. His savvy business moves resulted in transforming two Chevy trucks and motors into four new Dodge trucks with 22 employees by January 19, 1997. “We were facing significant difficulties; we had an unsponsored truck,” recalled Roehrig. “Dodge reached out with an enticing package that allowed us to form a partnership through Dana.”
Following this transition came remarkable success; they notched their first victory at Western Auto/Parts America 200 while Tony Raines triumphed three times during the next season. Fans rejoiced as Kurt revitalized Dodge’s presence within NASCAR once more while aiming for their inaugural Cup Series entry in 1998.
Today I am deeply saddened to share news of my friend and mentor Kurt Roehrig’s passing.
