Kyle Busch reminisced about the moment he and his brother Kurt missed out on winning the $1 million prize at the 2007 NASCAR All-Star race. In a conversation with Graham Bensinger, Kyle shared how they didn’t communicate for a long time and how their grandmother had never seen them together since that race.
Now in his 20th season in the NASCAR Cup Series, 39-year-old Kyle Busch drives the No. 8 Chevrolet Camaro for Richard Childress Racing. His elder brother, Kurt, has also raced in the premier series and clinched the championship title in 2004.
During the 2007 NASCAR All-Star Challenge held in Charlotte, both Kyle and Kurt were racing side by side when Kyle’s No. 5 Chevrolet lost control and crashed into Kurt’s No. 2 Dodge. This incident led to both drivers retiring from the race with only 18 laps remaining.
With the $1 million prize at stake, it was natural for Kyle and Kurt to feel let down. They did not speak to each other for the remainder of that year, including the holiday season. Their grandmother took it upon herself to mediate their differences.
“Grandma knows all this. So like I go visit grandma, he goes and visits grandma, like grandma never gets to see either of us together. And so, she was upset about it,” Kyle Busch shared with Bensinger in 2021 [5:32].
“It was a bury the hatchet moment, and she’s like, ‘Boys, I need my boys. I don’t need this animosity. I don’t need this stress level at the dinner table. You boys need to put that behind.’ And it was, ‘Yes, grandma,’” Kurt Busch recalled [5:42].
By 2008, the Busch brothers were back on speaking terms. Kyle further noted that at his 200th win celebration in 2019, Kurt took accountability for the wreck that occurred during the 2007 All-Star crash, saying:
“He wrecked me. He finally admitted it just two years ago,” Kyle Busch remarked. “Finally admitted it at my 200th win party. I called him out on it, and he confessed he wrecked me. All I wanted was for him to acknowledge that he wrecked me,” Kyle Busch stated [6:07].
As a side note, Kyle achieved his 200th career win in NASCAR in 2019: 53 victories in the Cup Series, 94 in the Xfinity Series, and 53 in the Truck Series.
In 2007, Kevin Harvick claimed the $1 million grand prize. The Busch brothers subsequently won the NASCAR All-Star races in 2010 and 2017, respectively.
Kyle Busch faced significant financial loss after missing the 2024 playoffs
Kyle Busch acknowledged the financial hit he experienced due to his performance this season. He did not qualify for the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs this year, breaking his 11-year streak of postseason participation.
Additionally, the RCR driver has not secured a first-place finish this year, which threatens to end his 19-year streak of winning at least one race by season’s end.
In response, the 63-time NASCAR Cup Series winner said:
“I’ve lost a substantial amount of money, let’s say, in the last few weeks (because) of not making the playoffs, not getting wins, and things like that,” Busch explained. “That’s a big hit. But again, it is what it is.”
With just seven races remaining in the 2024 season, the next event is set for Kansas Speedway. So far in the first two playoff races, the No. 8 driver has struggled, finishing 25th at Bristol Motor Speedway and 30th at Watkins Glen International.
The Las Vegas native is currently in 20th place in the standings, with five top-five finishes and ten top-ten finishes to his name.
