After sending beloved forward Matt Rempe to Hartford in the American Hockey League, the New York Rangers have promoted Jake Leschyshyn for their matchup against the Anaheim Ducks on Saturday.
At 25 years old, Leschyshyn is expected to be the extra forward for Saturday’s game unless any Rangers player is suffering from an illness or injury. All 12 forwards took part in practice on Friday. Alexis Lafreniere had previously missed practice this week but returned to play and scored his fourth goal during a 3-1 defeat to the Florida Panthers on Thursday.
In Hartford’s 4-3 overtime victory against Lehigh Valley on Friday, Leschyshyn was named the Second Star. He netted his first goal of the season just 49 seconds into the third period and also assisted on a goal scored earlier by defenseman Matthew Robertson. he has tallied three points (one goal and two assists) over five games this season.
Last year, Leschyshyn participated in 47 games with Hartford, accumulating 19 points (eight goals and 11 assists).
Leschyshyn holds 77 games of NHL experience, including 14 games played across two seasons with the Rangers. Last season, he did not score in his one game with New York, and he was unable to register any points in 13 games during the 2022-23 season after being claimed off waivers from the Vegas Golden Knights.
During 63 games with the Golden Knights across two seasons, he achieved six points (two goals).
They chose him in the second round (No. 62 overall) of the 2017 NHL Draft.

As a bottom-six forward, Leschyshyn is expected to watch as Sam Carrick centers the fourth line once more, joined by Jonny Brodzinski and Adam Edstrom. The impressive performance of that line is why Rempe was unable to make the roster and was reassigned to Hartford. Brodzinski and Edstrom, both previous teammates of Leschyshyn in Hartford, have secured regular playing time during this season’s seven games with New York.

Jimmy Vesey began skating with the Rangers this week. The 31-year-old forward is on LTIR due to a lower-body injury, which requires him to miss the season’s first 10 games. He continues to wear a no-contact jersey during practice, and there is no schedule for his return according to coach Peter Laviolette.
The Rangers (5-1-1) are aiming to recover on Saturday following a disappointing loss to the Panthers. Meanwhile, the Ducks enter with a record of 3-2-1 after securing a 3-1 victory against the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday.
