MESA, Ariz. — The racing community may be experiencing the aftereffects of what is called Kyle Larson Double Attempt Fatigue Syndrome.
Reigning NASCAR Cup Series champion Ryan Blaney revealed that he and fellow Team Penske driver Scott McLaughlin from IndyCar have discussed their aspirations to conquer both the Indianapolis 500 and Coca-Cola 600 on the same day. On top of that, NHRA Funny Car driver Austin Prock has expressed interest in participating in Indy car racing as well.
While it remains uncertain how serious these drivers are about this formidable challenge, Blaney shared with Autoweek’s Deb Williams, “Racers naturally want to explore other series. We are curious about the similarities and differences between various cars. I grew up watching Indy cars, which I found incredibly exciting alongside NASCAR. I fondly recall listening on the radio when (Sam) Hornish clinched his victory at the 500.”
Josef Newgarden provided team owner Roger Penske with his 20th Indianapolis 500 victory over Memorial Day weekend, and Blaney suggested that he and McLaughlin would relish adding a little extra drama for Team Penske next May.
“I’ve been eager to kick off a petition … for me and Scottie Mac (McLaughlin) doing the double,” Blaney said. “I’m not sure if anyone has attempted it before, so it would be pretty unique for both of us to achieve this in one year. It would likely create quite a few headaches for many at Team Penske, but I think it’d be thrilling,” he added.
The most intriguing twist in all this speculation came from John Force Racing’s camp during the June 13-14 race weekend at Bristol Dragway (Tenn.).
An idea inspired by wine struck Force—who had suffered severe injuries in a crash at Virginia Motorsports Park on June 21—and he turned to Prock with a surprising suggestion: “What if we threw an Indy car into the mix?”
Prock replied wittily by asking, “Are you going to drive?”
“You want me to risk my life?” Force shot back mischievously. “How about you give it a go?”
Without flinching, Prock affirmed enthusiastically: ”I’d jump at that opportunity without thinking twice.”
“That’d be quite an adventure! I’ve never set foot there before—maybe I’ll rent a car,” Force remarked thoughtfully. “We need to keep everyone guessing.”
Pleased with their imaginative dialogue was Prock who declared, “Trust me – this will make headlines.”
“That really fired me up,” commented Force. “We haven’t ventured into that world yet; Rahal (son-in-law Graham Rahal) will probably take me aside later and grumble at me saying ‘Why even entertain such thoughts?’ But I’m always searching for ways to spark excitement.”
Force was impressed by how Prock transitioned seamlessly from midgets into dragsters and then Funny Cars without missing a beat while consistently achieving success.
Tony Stewart stands out as one among few bold figures transitioning from successful careers in both IndyCar and NASCAR into drag racing; though initially startled by such talk regarding Force’s idea; he rightly stated: “My advice for John would simply be: ‘Don’t get behind that wheel.’ He doesn’t owe anyone anything — he’s established himself as GOAT; no necessity remains for him now.” He added concerning Prock’s ambition: “If that’s what you’re set on … pursue your dreams! I’ve come across ample scenarios throughout my journey where I’ve learned never utter ‘never.’ If that’s genuinely what Austin desires while also securing viable chances ahead then naturally we should assist however possible; despite not being inside any vehicle myself within two decades means encompassing changes gone unnoticed especially within today’s version of IndyCar.”
Diving deeper into industry insights stemming from A.J Foyt relationships left Stewart open minded mentioning he’d connect regarding possible opportunities stating apology noting,”But honestly…it sounds like some minor disagreement awaits since after all ,that guy seems far harder headed than even I am .But fun activities await if ever proposed!”
