Basel, Switzerland – Former world champion PV Sindhu faced an unexpected early defeat at the Swiss Open 2025, losing in the first round to Denmark’s Julie Jakobsen. Meanwhile, Kidambi Srikanth battled to victory against fellow Indian HS Prannoy, and qualifier Sankar Subramanian also advanced in men’s singles.
Sindhu’s Struggles Continue with First-Round Loss
PV Sindhu, currently ranked 17th in the world, was defeated by world No. 31 Julie Jakobsen in a 61-minute match, with scores of 21-17, 21-19. This loss marks Sindhu’s third consecutive first-round exit this year, a concerning trend after her quarter-final appearance at the India Open. she also failed to advance past the first round at the Indonesia Masters and All England Open. The Swiss Open was a title she claimed in 2022.
Srikanth, Subramanian Progress in Men’s Singles
In contrast to Sindhu’s setback, kidambi Srikanth secured a hard-fought win against HS Prannoy, with a score of 23-21, 23-21. Srikanth, currently ranked 49th, faces a challenging second-round match against world No. 6 Li Shifeng of China.
Sankar Subramanian dominated his match against Magnus johannesen, winning 21-5, 21-16. Subramanian is set to compete against world No. 2 Anders Antonsen of Denmark.
Other Indian Players’ Performances
Anupama Upadhyaya and Isharani Baruah also progressed to the next round in women’s singles. Upadhyaya defeated Anmol Kharb 21-14, 21-13, while Baruah overcame Aakarshi Kashyap with a score of 21-18, 17-21, 20-22.
However, several other Indian players, including Malvika Bansod, Kiran George, and Ayush Shetty, were eliminated in the first round.
