Throughout our Ramp to Camp series, we have focused largely on the significant headlines as the Boston Celtics gear up to defend their 2024 title. However, what narratives might emerge later in the season?
In the 13th edition of our preseason series, we asked our NBC Sports Boston panel to project forward to the 2025 All-Star weekend and identify a major storyline involving the Celtics at the midpoint of the season.
(Explore our complete Ramp to Camp series here.)
If we look back to February 2024, the Celtics entered the All-Star break boasting a remarkable 43-12 record, following a staggering 50-point victory against the Brooklyn Nets. A headline from our podcast during the All-Star weekend in Indianapolis stated: “Tatum, Celtics are the talk of the town at All-Star weekend.”
Will the Celtics continue to be the center of league discussions come February 2025?
Typically, we aim to avoid directly repeating our panel predictions, but one of our respondents has closely mirrored our initial headline selection. So, we’ll let him take the floor:
Are these Celtics even superior to the 2024 championship team?
I envision the 2024-25 Celtics finishing with four fewer wins than last year’s squad, yet I wouldn’t be surprised if they exhibit even greater dominance in their pursuit of a repeat title. Since I don’t foresee any major trade rumors on the horizon, I believe that discussions around the team will primarily revolve around their prospects for winning a consecutive championship.
During our panel’s prediction sessions for this series, we highlighted our admiration for the 2008-09 Celtics as a benchmark for this year’s team. Both teams established immediate chemistry, were relentless in their pursuit of victory, and raised banners in their inaugural season together. However, it’s often overlooked just how impressive the 2008-09 team was, as they returned nearly their entire championship core (excluding James Posey).
Even if one argues that the Eastern Conference has improved, there exists a significant opportunity for the 2024-25 Celtics to hit the ground running due to their chemistry and consistency. While the Knicks work on fitting Mikal Bridges into their lineup, and the 76ers navigate a new Big Three with the addition of Guerschon Yabusele (oh, we meant Paul George), the Celtics should require no such adaptation period.
Last season, Boston hadn’t fully accelerated by the midpoint of the season. It’s easy to overlook, given their substantial lead in the East by season’s end, but the Celtics were only ahead of Cleveland by 5.5 games in mid-February.
If the Celtics can sustain their early success without Kristaps Porzingis and then feel a surge from his return, we believe there will be significant excitement surrounding just how impressive this team has been from the 2023 tipoff until the 2025 All-Star break.
Perhaps complacency sets in, or injuries occur. But if this roster remains healthy and focused, it certainly seems unwarranted for their dominance to diminish. This team is incredibly deep and exceptionally talented.
Here are the other storylines our panel has considered:
Should the Celtics consider holding Kristaps Porzingis out until the playoffs?
Ultimately, June is what counts, and they can reach that stage without him. His performance in the Finals demonstrated that even a glimpse of Playoff Porzingis can elevate them. What a luxury that is.
Tom Giles, Multi-platform host
With everyone back to full strength, the Celtics are once again the team to beat in the NBA.
I understand Porzingis may return much sooner, but if they decide to be cautious with him, he could have them peaking just before the break.
Are the Celtics sufficiently deep to repeat without Porzingis?
Ideally, Porzingis returns by Christmas, and Boston strides confidently forward. However, there’s also a possibility he might experience a setback that jeopardizes his postseason participation. Last year, the Celtics thrived with a 10-2 record in the playoffs without their star big man; can they replicate that success?
Phil Perry, Chris Forsberg, and Michael Hurley share their reactions to the news that Kristaps Porzingis is set to miss 5-6 months following his ankle surgery.
The Celtics seem well-prepared for a repeat.
I don’t foresee the Celtics easing up during the regular season. This team appears driven as they head into 2024-25. Whether it’s the Olympic intrigue or the ambition of being the first squad to repeat since 2018, this group is likely to remain focused throughout the year. It would be surprising if the Celtics are not topping the Eastern Conference standings by the All-Star break.
Kevin Miller, VP, Content
The Celtics continue to rank among the top teams in the Eastern Conference and are currently experiencing a surge as Kristaps Porzingis returns in early January, showcasing impressive performance.
The team is quickly finding its rhythm again and receiving outstanding support from the bench, particularly from Payton Pritchard, Xavier Tillman, and Lonnie Walker IV.
