No one, not even likely Chauncey Billups himself, expects his position to be secure at this point; the record simply doesn’t support it. It’s also conceivable that Portland could trade one or more of their key players. However, offloading all three pillars would worsen the situation rather than improve it in the long run.
Remind yourself why the Blazers embarked on this rebuilding journey two years ago. Faced with a choice—keeping an increasingly dissatisfied Damian Lillard through his contract, potentially facing his wrath and risking losing him for nothing—or initiating a trade—the team opted for the latter. It wasn’t exactly a love affair in that final period. The situation was untenable, so a trade seemed like the only viable solution.
Rather than accepting Miami’s lowball offer as Lillard requested, General Manager Joe Cronin packaged him to the Milwaukee Bucks for players who eventually formed Deandre Ayton, Robert Williams III, and future draft picks.
As you point out, Ayton remains a tradeable asset. So does Williams. The story might not be over on those deals. But the real treasure lies in 2028, 2029, and 2030. During these years, the Blazers possess the right to swap picks with Milwaukee. These high draft picks are potentially game-changers for a rebuilding franchise.
Given the Bucks’ struggles so far this year, it’s probably safe to say Joe Cronin is sitting back, observing and silently thinking, “Hmm…that doesn’t look great on your end.”
Remember, though, we are just at the beginning of the process. The true payoff awaits four seasons from now. Until then, losing—even humiliating losses—are expected.
