This month, the Phoenix Suns have been highlighted in HoopsHype’s all-time greatest player lists.
Seven players, either former or current Suns, were featured in HoopsHype’s compilation of the 78 greatest basketball players ever — Shaquille O’Neal (9th), Kevin Durant (12th), Charles Barkley (25th), Chris Paul (28th), Steve Nash (35th), Jason Kidd (40th), and Vince Carter (70th), who only played 51 games with the Suns in a single season.
All these players also made it onto the distinct list of the top 20 players at their respective positions.
Interestingly, Grant Hill’s absence from HoopsHype’s 78 all-time players list stands out.
Injuries curtailed Hill’s prime years, although he was once seen as the successor to Michael Jordan before misfortune struck. During his time with the Detroit Pistons in the 1990s, Hill was among the league’s elite players.
Later in his career, he made significant contributions to the Suns’ achievements.
While it’s not surprising that Hill was omitted from the 78-player list, it’s worth noting that his healthy, younger version was competitive with many players who were included. Standing at 6-8 and weighing 225 pounds, Hill had the ability to drive to the rim effortlessly, showcased impressive leaping ability, and excelled in rebounding, passing, and defending.
Below, we review the Suns who made the all-time lists and the top 20 players at each position. Additionally, it’s noteworthy that Hill does not appear in the top 20 for either shooting guard or small forward.

78 Greatest Players Ever
Six current or former Suns – O’Neal (9th), Durant (12th), Barkley (25th), Paul (28th), Nash (35th), Kidd (40th), and Carter (70th).
HoopsHype stated: “In conjunction with Mike D’Antoni and the renowned ‘Seven Seconds or Less’ Suns, Steve Nash advanced the game of basketball through his exceptional pick-and-roll skills and his capability to shoot while dribbling, including long-range shots—skills that were less prevalent during his playing days. Although Nash’s two MVP awards sparked controversy, there is no doubt about his status as one of the greatest players of his era, showcasing his extraordinary talent as a point guard, which combined elite passing with remarkable shooting ability.”
All-Time Top 3 – LeBron James, Michael Jordan, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
20 Greatest Point Guards Ever
Three former Suns – Paul (6th), Nash (8th), and Kidd (10th).
HoopsHype commented: “Known as The Point God, Chris Paul is one of the most reliable floor leaders in NBA history, acting similarly to a head coach on the court. He excels at positioning teammates effectively, exploits opponents through pick-and-roll sequences, and possesses an incredible ability to score when necessary due to his outstanding mid-range shooting prowess.”
“The only element still absent from his legacy is a championship ring, but he will undoubtedly earn a place in the Hall of Fame, regardless. Currently, it seems he has come to terms with the idea that he might conclude his career without one.”
It’s uncertain whether he will have a successful career without it, especially as he joins the rebuilding San Antonio Spurs. Regardless, he is widely regarded as one of the greatest players in basketball history, pound-for-pound. (In fact, we ranked him as the best short player of all time).
1-2-3 all-time PGs – Magic Johnson, Stephen Curry, and Oscar Robertson.
20 greatest small forwards ever
One current Sun – Durant (3rd).
HoopsHype stated: “Kevin Durant makes scoring look incredibly effortless; it’s almost unreal. At 7 feet tall, he possesses excellent ball-handling skills, swift footwork, and an immaculate jump shot that can reach the basket from nearly anywhere. Additionally, Durant showcases his defensive prowess when necessary, swiftly moving his feet and blocking shots during critical moments. While he may climb a few spots in the rankings, his chances for top placement are hampered by missed games due to injury.
“He will remain the greatest player in the history of Olympic basketball, being the only player to earn four gold medals and the singular star with MVPs across the NBA, Olympics, and World Cup.”
1-2-3 all-time SFs – James, Larry Bird, and Durant.
20 greatest power forwards ever
One former Sun – Barkley (6th).
HoopsHype noted: “Charles Barkley, famously known as the Round Mound of Rebound, stood out not only for his outspoken nature but also for his remarkable prowess in the paint despite being listed at 6-foot-6. In his prime, he was a force on the boards and as a scorer, thanks to his incredible strength and explosiveness. Though Barkley never clinched the elusive championship ring, he remains one of the greatest power forwards in history, due to his dominant face-up and post-up skills, along with his exceptional rebounding ability.”
1-2-3 all-time PFs – Tim Duncan, Karl Malone, and Kevin Garnett.
20 greatest centers ever
One former Sun – O’Neal (4th).
HoopsHype stated: “Shaquille O’Neal was the most physically dominant athlete in the NBA since Wilt Chamberlain, an astonishing combination of size, strength, and unreal explosiveness. During his prime, teams would make moves solely to contain him. Many average centers benefitted from that, simply because they were another large presence to throw at O’Neal.
“It’s somewhat absurd that the Big Aristotle won only one MVP award, given that there were several seasons when he was the league’s most dominating player. Although O’Neal’s desire to be a star off the court may have slightly diminished his on-court effectiveness, he consistently delivered a powerful performance throughout his career, notwithstanding his struggles with free-throw shooting.”
1-2-3 all-time Cs – Abdul-Jabbar, Bill Russell, and Wilt Chamberlain.

20 Greatest Shooting Guards of All Time
One noted Sun – Carter (10th).
HoopsHype stated: “In addition to being among the most dynamic dunkers in NBA history, Vince Carter enjoyed a productive career spanning 22 years – a feat few anticipated, given his dependence on athleticism during his prime. Many critics suggest that with his exceptional talent, he could have accomplished more than just two All-NBA selections (neither of which was a 1st Team nod) and questioned his passion and commitment to the sport. Nevertheless, he stood out as one of the premier shooting guards during his peak and remained a fan favorite, despite never securing a significant championship. Moreover, would he have played for 22 seasons if he didn’t truly love the game of basketball?”
Top 3 All-Time Shooting Guards: Jordan, Kobe Bryant, and Dwyane Wade.
