PLYMOUTH, Mich. — The Philadelphia Flyers have initiated a rebuilding strategy aimed at transforming the team into Stanley Cup contenders in the near future.
The 2024 World Junior Summer Showcase offered an early glimpse of potential stars who could contribute to that revival.
The Flyers boasted an NHL-high total of eight prospects participating from the United States, Canada, Sweden, and Finland in this event, which concluded on Saturday. It marked the first step for teams to finalize their rosters for the upcoming 2025 IIHF World Junior Championship, scheduled to take place in Ottawa from December 26 to January 5.
“It’s certainly exciting,” said Keith Jones, president of hockey operations for the Flyers. “We’re delighted that our players are receiving opportunities to compete internationally. I believe that experience is invaluable.”
Among those players representing Canada were five individuals: goalie Carson Bjarnason; defensemen Oliver Bonk and Carter Sotheran; and forwards Denver Barkey and Jett Luchanko.
Bonk was selected in the first round (No. 22) of the 2023 NHL Draft and was aware he wouldn’t make it to Plymouth after playing exhibition games last week in Windsor, Ontario. As a returning player from Canada’s squad at the 2024 WJC, he will likely return this season to play with London in the Ontario Hockey League as part of one of Canada’s top two defensive pairings during WJC play.
“Playing at home can be perceived as a lot of pressure,” commented Riley Armstrong, director of player development for Flyers. “However, his mindset going into it is positive—he enjoys playing where he grew up. Friends and family will all be there supporting him.”
“Realistically though, he’ll approach it like any other game—he possesses a mature outlook uncommon for young players his age which makes me confident he’s on track toward joining the NHL soon.”
Barkey could also assume an important role for Team Canada. The third-round pick (No. 95) from last year’s draft accumulated an impressive tally—102 points (35 goals and 67 assists) over just 64 games with London last season.
Currently playing center while with Canada despite being expected on wing once he reaches NHL caliber showcases Barkey’s adaptability
.
“I haven’t played center since I turned sixteen back when I was in London,” Barkey explained. “It has required some adaptation; if I want a spot on this team though versatility will be key—it’s essential that I’m capable anywhere within our lineup.”
The Flyers compare Barkey’s profile (standing at 5 feet-9 inches tall weighing around155 pounds) favorably alongside forward Travis Konecny who led them last season boasting68 points amassed through33 goals scored alongside35 assists recorded across76 outings—all culminating recently into signing Giacchino Spacex & $70 million deal extending over eight years commencing July25th
.Barkley recognizes strengthening himself physically remains vital towards achieving his goal reaching elite level hockey confirming recent progress stating10lbs had already been gained since previous September .
“Once [Barky] achieves greater maturity perhaps pairing strength correlating developement continue forward trajectory although takes couple years caution advised ahead “(Armstrong adds).”Thereafter watch promising evolutions we will witness emerge among peers /potentially reach advanced level given how knowledgeable assesses aspects game like elevating parallels traits seen reflected within.Konechny”
