Pedro Martinez Foundation to Open State-of-the-Art Charter School in the Dominican Republic
November 20th, 2023
At the seventh annual Pedro Martinez Foundation Gala in Boston, Pedro Martinez, the legendary former Red Sox pitcher, announced plans to open a groundbreaking charter school in the Dominican Republic. The gala, attended by numerous baseball stars and philanthropists, celebrated the foundation’s mission to improve the lives of underprivileged children in Martinez’s homeland.
The gala began with a poignant video showcasing the impoverished conditions in the Dominican Republic, including shacks similar to the one Martinez grew up in. Moved by the images of malnourished families, Martinez addressed the audience, sharing his personal experience and emphasizing the importance of giving back.
Together with his wife, Carolina Cruz de Martinez, who has been actively involved in running the foundation since they started dating, Martinez is dedicated to changing lives through their philanthropic efforts. The next endeavor in their mission is the establishment of a fully funded charter school, expected to open in 2024.
The state-of-the-art facility will revolutionize education in the Dominican Republic, offering sports programs such as basketball and volleyball, which are currently lacking in public schools. Carolina expressed her excitement, stating that the school will be the first of its kind in Latin America and a significant milestone for the educational system in the country.
Martinez, known for his exceptional pitching skills, reflected on his own journey from poverty to success. He acknowledged that without his talent for baseball, he might still be struggling to afford bus fare under a mango tree. Grateful for the opportunities he received, Martinez is determined to provide similar chances to others, regardless of their athletic abilities.
The Pedro Martinez Foundation, with over 60 programs, aims to empower children through education and life skills. Their holistic approach fosters a sense of identity and empowerment among the students, ensuring a brighter future for the community.
The Pedro Martinez Foundation Gala has become a highly anticipated event on the Boston philanthropic calendar, attracting generous benefactors who contribute to the foundation’s success. Carolina expressed her gratitude for the support, emphasizing that every cent raised at the gala directly impacts the lives of those in need.
This year’s gala welcomed notable baseball figures, including Jason Varitek, Jim Rice, Justin Turner, Corey Kluber, Jeremy Peña, and Willy Adames. Jeremy Peña, in awe of Martinez’s impact, described the charter school as a transformative opportunity for the youth, providing them with essential tools and resources.
The Pedro Martinez Foundation’s commitment to improving education and creating opportunities for underprivileged children is set to make a lasting impact in the Dominican Republic. With the opening of the state-of-the-art charter school, Pedro and Carolina Martinez continue to inspire hope and change lives.
