Elliotte Friedman has reported that Patrik Laine is no longer participating in the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program. He has been cleared to return and is allowed by the Columbus Blue Jackets to engage with other teams interested in trading for him.
However, there are two significant challenges ahead for the talented 26-year-old: he is currently recovering from shoulder surgery, and his contract still has two years left with a substantial $8.7 million AAV.
The Blue Jackets might consider retaining part of his salary, but this will depend on their ability to secure a favorable return.
Carolina emerges as the most logical candidate for Laine, given their strong Finnish player presence and recent absences of Jake Guentzel and Teuvo Teravainen creating vacancies. Other teams like Los Angeles, Chicago, and Montreal could also potentially pursue him.
